Jones: Pick Butch at 12

Cape Town - Former Australian coach Eddie Jones says the Springboks should pick Butch James at inside centre for their clash against Fiji.

Centre Jean de Villiers bruised his ribs against Wales and will miss the clash against the islanders on Saturday. This leaves coach Peter de Villiers with a tough decision about who to pick in the No 12 jersey. Juan de Jongh, Patrick Lambie, Francois Steyn or Butch James?

But Jones believes the decision for Saturday's game is clear-cut. "From a South African perspective, the key is finding someone who can play like Jean (De Villiers). Butch (James) can do that. He can make his tackles, carry well and distribute," Jones told the website, RugbyXV.

Jones - who was the Bok technical advisor at the 2007 World Cup - also believes James's boot will provide an extra weapon alongside flyhalf Morné Steyn, as the Boks' tactical kicking would need to be spot-on if they are to avoid the Fijians from launching dangerous counter-attacks.

"To have the option of a second kicking game at 12 against Fiji is also very important. The Boks have to kick off the front foot, not under pressure, to ensure the Fijians don't have a platform to counter."

Jones says he would play De Jongh from the bench, which could give the Boks some much needed spark later on in the game.

"Having Juan de Jongh coming off the bench will also provide impetus. Starting Butch will help Jaque Fourie, who looked the sharpest of all the Bok backs (against Wales)," said Jones.

Not so smart as Eddie, but how about Frans Steyn at 12 and Lambie at 15? Keeo Butch at 10 and save Morne for the big games.

      Johnny-BB - 2011-09-14 08:31

.....Agree with Eddie, ...Jean de Villiers can't tackle and just wants to intercept.... same with Bryan Banana.... ....2 weak links in the back line... .....Butch at no 12 and Hougaard at no 11...

      GT - 2011-09-14 09:32

Why keep Morne for the big games. The only reason he kicks goals for the halfway line is because he cannot take the team PAST that point as flyhalf.

      POLAR_BEAR - 2011-09-14 09:42

Johny-BB - Butch tackles well when he flies in with no arms and close to the neck..its all he knows. Watch the Wales game closely. Yellow card guarenteed if he plays.

      Northern Stormer - 2011-09-14 12:18

      roboman1 - 2011-09-14 12:45

Good option with Frans Steyn at centre and Lambie at fullback, but I would leave Morne at flyhalf for his accurate goal kicking, and play Butch from the bench. I also reckon they should maybe start with Hougaard at wing. I watched the Samoa game this morning. Kick in behind them, they slow to turn and a little untidy on the retreat. And watch their scrumhalf, he is a nippy player and strong runner. Our loose forwards better be ready for lots of work.

      FM150 - 2011-09-14 23:21

@GT- Thats very true! He stands so deep on attack by the time the inside gets the ball his 10m behind the advantage line! Strange how the first try in 240minutes came when he was left out of the move. . . mmm

  • Tools1 - 2011-09-14 07:51

I agree we looked a little weak on defence in the first and second chanel, Butchie wont be so easy to run over. I also think with Du Preez's form being so poor we should start with Hougard, Or should we let him regain some form? glad im not the coach! and then there is the Bismark issue, I would start with Bissie and put John on 20min to go.

      BardofAvon - 2011-09-14 08:04

We need a tough, blunt team for Fiji and Samoa. That's why Butch James and Smit are good choices, and Lambie and Houghie are not ideal. Save them for later.

      On the Verge - 2011-09-14 08:21

Bizzie is a must for 80min. How about playing him at blinside, with Schalk at 8th man? Then that show pony can come on with 20min to play. Chilliboy can then come on when JS gets tired, say after 5min...

Hope that Div is keeping up with the Jones's thinking.

      Northern Stormer - 2011-09-14 12:21

No he won't. Jones was connected to Jake and he was part of n team who won the RWC before - that is a threat to PdV !!!

  • truthteller - 2011-09-14 08:02

Thats why u not the Eddie

  • rfreeman - 2011-09-14 08:35

perfect game for chilliboy to have a run. i fear because matfield is not there smit will play for the experience/leadership. my top two - bizzie for 60min chilliboy for 20min. he's on form too, such a waste

  • vdwjasper - 2011-09-14 08:38

I would play Juan de Jongh. In last years S14 season the De Jongh/Fourie combination was absolutely lethal for the Stormers - even more so than the De Villiers/Fourie combination of this year (IMHO). De Jongh has pace and good feet, keeps the defence guessing and creates time and space for his outside backs. Lacks a bit on long ball distribution though. However, I would also venture to say that his defence might be better than Butch's. I would play Butch above Morne. Morne could not control the game against Wales - we were stuck in our own 22 for most of the game - and again Morne's tackling was shocking. He just cannot hold his channel. He played well against the ABs few weeks back, but one swallow doesn't make a summer.

  • rfreeman - 2011-09-14 08:40

i agree starting Butch, but i want to see De Jongh have a run. play Butch at flyhalf - its Fiji, do we really have to be so conservative?

  • ozzymate - 2011-09-14 09:23

now here's a fella begging for a job as consultant. somebody please employ him or he'll just keep blabbing . nz dont want & neither do we in oz.

  • AndV - 2011-09-14 09:28

Make Eddie Jones couch of the boks and we will win the next world cup again. If it wasn't for Eddie Jones, Jake would not have made it. It is time SARU give recognition to Eddie for his role in RWC 2007.

  • Big Lowie - 2011-09-14 10:04

You dont think maybe starting hougaard at 9 butch 10 and de jong at 12 may not be the way to go?

  • cdj1402 - 2011-09-14 10:29

I hope that Pdiv is heeding all the valuable free advice he is receiving!

  • warerugby - 2011-09-14 11:27

I believe Francois Steyn at 12 and Lambie at 15 will give us the real picture, if the do well they might be the answer on attack for the rest of the tournament???

  • Niel - 2011-09-14 12:31

I know i will probably be criticised for this but who cares. I have read all your comments (yes im bored at work) and realise that everyone has a different opinion. Now understand why PDV has such a hard task. yes yes yes, i know his past decisions, but lets look at present. By the looks of it, no matter what he does he will be wrong. Put butch at 12, then half the world criticises, put him at 10 then you ask more questions. Appears we will NEVER be happy no matter what he does. Im not a jake fan or a major PDV fan, but i feel a bit for him. I 100% agree with Bizzie. Smits form at 2 is appauling and can rather provide back up as a prop or with a blazer on. Chilliboy is in form and could be a replacement for bizzie. As for habana, I would prefer him and take JP off. Hougaard has got to start either from the wing or scrummy. He provides a new dimension for SA and tackles well. As for Butch Vs De Jongh, mmmmmmmm, difficult as they offers 2 different games. De jongh is quicker, tackles well but makes wrong decisions often. Butch is completely unpredictable. Excellent one day and pathetic on another, HOWEVER, for extra beef, i would go with butch at 12. Morne must stay as butch for me doesnt kick well. PLEASE - no more injuries and leave FLIP VDM off. Cant stand him.

  • Jacques Ackermann - 2011-09-14 14:16

De jongh is not in the same class as franna steyn at 12 i am sorry. at metro racing in france he had a blinder in that position. he is not a fullback. 12 is his only jumper. de jongh is frail on attack. he is more a natural line runner so 13 will be more of natural shift. he only was shifted to 12 to accomadate for fourie at the stormers. butch played 12 for bath but was ineffective for them. with a lambie 15 butch 10 and franna 12 combo we can rip defences apart. franna will get the backline moving not like jean "i have glue in my hands" de villiers. the undertaker phoned yesterday saying that he found his corpse still with the ball in his hands. he pulls a david copperfield week in and week out **going on to the field and disappearing for 80 min** de jongh is to light for that busy 10 12 channell. on defence he has some techincal issues. 13 would be ideal for him but fourie has that jumper all to himself
