The Boks take on the Islanders - renowned for their potency on attack - in Wellington on Saturday.
Four years ago at the previous Rugby Word Cup, the South Africans nearly came unstuck against a spirited Fiji in the quarter-finals in Marseille. That game was decided in large part by a superb cover tackle from Pietersen on a tryline-bound Ifereimi Rawaqa with the Boks leading 23-20 in the second half. The Sharks wing's try-saving tackle swung the momentum of the game to help the Boks claim a 37-20 victory.
And Pietersen, speaking to Die Burger newspaper, says the Boks could take a lot out of what he amassed that Sunday afternoon back in 2007.
"Yes, that tackle against Fiji was unbelievable and made me famous in that World Cup.
"It was strange - I was the top try scorer in the 2007 Super-Rugby competition, but my defence was constantly questioned. I had to constantly hear my defence was not good enough. But then I showed that I could tackle too."
And Pietersen admits more of the same will be needed if they are to come out on top again against the big Fijians.
"You defend differently against such big and strong guys. It's a mistake to try and target their upper bodies.
"The best way is to go in low and take them around the ankles. The Fijians can bump you off and can also side-step."
Bok fullback, Patrick Lanbie also echoed Pietersen's words on how they will aim to stop their counterparts on Saturday.
"Something I was told as a youngster is that everyone's ankles are similar sizes, so you'll find I'll be going for their ankles," Lambie told SAPA.
