Giteau omission taboo topic?

2011-08-18 09:02

Sydney - Australia coach Robbie Deans has refused to explain his reasons for omitting Wallabies veteran Matt Giteau from his 30-man rugby Rugby World Cup squad.

Giteau, 28, made way for flyhalf Berrick Barnes as backup for Quade Cooper in the squad named on Thursday for the World Cup in starting next month in New Zealand, an announcement foreshadowed by Giteau's thinly veiled Twitter post on  Wednesday.

Deans denied there was any friction between he and Giteau, but would not explain his reasons for dropping him, saying "I don't want to go into specific details. It's tough enough for him to swallow without picking over that as well."

Giteau will join French club Toulon next year, meaning his test career could be effectively over.

Brave man... I like this coache's styl. Unrelenting! Good stuff!

      Bulldozer - 2011-08-18 09:12

I disagree. Giteau's fans have a right to know why he hasn't been selected. I'm sure it's a friction issue though.

I wish Australia loses a WC because of this

      Howzitekse - 2011-08-18 16:34

Bulldozer in Australia and NZ selection based on old performances is not a right. Players who lose form are replaced by players in form. The best guys play, and Senior players shut the F up. That is why they are no 1 and 2 in the world. - 2011-08-18 16:50

Howzitekse - Is that why Henry still picks Mills? Is that also why Ma' Nonu starts over SBW?

      steam_engine - 2011-08-18 17:32

@ Howzitekse, maybe thats why Vickerman, Palu & Elsom are picked instead of a star fetcher Beau Robinson of Queensland Reds. Maybe you should change your rugby source!!!

      Howzitekse - 2011-08-18 19:57

Spike. Mills is playing awsome rugby right now, Nonu and SBW are both in the mix so you have no point. Pull some other names out of the hat. Steam-enjine, Vickerman is a lock, Palu and Elsom are not fetchers, so they are not in competition with Robinson who is not the no 1 fetcher in Aus, so your comment is blinkingwell baffling.

..shud there be a negative motive,wu r we to judge...aus rugby has put there faith in its the coach's call...u go wallabies!!

This is going to cost the Wobblies - klaar (for all the reasons mentioned yesterday).Deans also changing his captains 3 weeks before the WC? Ok, Rocky hasn't been the rock he should have been, but ditching him and appointing Horwill as WC captain NOW? Sorry chaps - but I think many have an inflated view of the Wobblies abilities. England to smash them out of the WC. Matt Gits to enjoy every moment :) Adam Ashley Cooper, Mcabe, Barnes etc etc, and no room for Gits amongst those names? Tsk tsk tsk.

      Bulldozer - 2011-08-18 10:10

Agree 100%. (Did I just say that?)

      GraemeBB - 2011-08-18 12:06

@SAFFA - the only thing that makes sense is that these two men have a bad relationship. One doesnt know what happens behind the scenes. Perhaps Deans has his reasons, but this is a huge call! There must be a serious problem. I am sure we will find out soon enough.

i can recall a team who ditched their succesful captain a month before the world cup and eventualy got thumped out when there where high hopes of them winning the cup.....

      Howzitekse - 2011-08-18 16:38

He was ditched because he was unfit, injury prone and slow and apeared to have lost interrest in the game.

More of a boohoo topic for Australia and a hooray-topic for the rest of us.

Giteau has behaved like a git in the recent past, seems the highest paid tag brings with it a brat attitude and it is no real surprise he and Deans don't get along.

all you blokes make a good argument for & against. I must add that before dingo deans went over to the "dark side" or is it yellow side? aka Oz, he was a winning coach with the crusaders and a loss was rare.He has been taking many knocks since starting as Oz coach but I had no doubt that this man has a damn good plan and just needs time to implement it. This is the start of his now well groomed and well thought out plan. Performing players who will make the impact he wants in every game. Oz are now a danger for any team they come up against cause dingo is no fool. he is smart.Me thinks Oz in final facing allblacks.
