Bookie pays out on All Blacks

2011-10-20 10:06

Wellington - An online bookmaker has already paid out bets on New Zealand to win Sunday's Rugby World Cup final, declaring opponents France "the worst team ever" to reach the tournament decider.

Ireland-based Paddy Power said it had paid more than NZ$1 million (R6.35 million) to punters who were backing red-hot favourites the All Blacks in the final at Auckland's Eden Park, despite their habit of choking on the World Cup stage.

"We've called it, we've said 'game over'," owner Paddy Power told Radio New Zealand.

"It's so one-sided the final, I mean France must be the worst team ever to reach a World Cup final and New Zealand are absolutely awesome this time around, so we've paid out already, taken our chances."

The bookmaker had New Zealand at 1/12 to lift the Cup, with France rated 6/1 outsiders.

"If they do happen to win and are the banana skin for New Zealand that they've been in the past, then we're going to be left with some very expensive egg on our faces," Power said.

"We've had our fingers burnt in the past, we've had a few things like the English Premier League where the 'wrong' team has won in the end."

While Kiwis remain anxious about the final after shock losses at the hands of Les Bleus in 1999 and 2007, Power was confident the All Blacks would repeat their 1987 success over France, also at Eden Park, to win the inaugural final.

"I know you're all down there with your legs crossed, your fingers crossed, your toes crossed and everything," he said.

"But in reality, look at this in the cold light of day, from a neutral's perspective, and New Zealand are absolute penalty kicks (certainties to win)."

Got to be joking? France are still in with a shot, I'm quietly, nervously confident but it only takes a yellow/red card or intercept blah blah blah to turn things around. Be a bummer for the bookie if the Frogs won, he'd have to pay out big time for the French punters that won.

Or a teeny little forward pass perhaps. Not to worry mate, our man Craig will keep it all on the straight and narrow.

      Renny - 2011-10-20 12:51

Worst one sided world cup ever. You can hardly commend the All Blacks for winning it. France in the final, impossible. This world cup was rigged!

  • Craig - 2011-10-20 10:38

Does the bookie get a discount for paying before the game? If not what's the benefit? If yes can the punter refuse?

      Matthew.Keeley - 2011-10-20 12:11

As far as I know they do this pay-out as a publicity stunt and take the risk of losing the R6million. In the process they have now got free advertsing all around the world - it might cost them R6million, but the chances are that they have just got a huge amount of free promotion for their company for nothing. Go France!

@Craig. There are 2 reasons for paying out early. 1) Publicity - and plenty of it and 2) By paying out early, funds are released to clients' accounts so that they can spend their winnings and hopefully lose.

We will know in the first 10mins whether France actually pitched up or not. They are so unpredictable.

      Michael - 2011-10-20 11:03

i dont know, 99 semi final AB's were blowing the french away and then the boys in blue came alive in the second half. But htey are by far the most unpredictable team in rugby!

The odds yesterday were: All Blacks win: 1/6, French win: 6/1 - so, if we do our calculations, he is just seeking publicity by giving the punters their money back? No loss to bookie would ever throw money away without reason. My prediction, for what it is worth? The French will cause a BIG upset, and win in the dying moments of the game by 1 point.

  • Razz - 2011-10-20 10:49

No fear......the Blacks will win easily.

  • Theuns - 2011-10-20 10:55

    Go France

  • Theprodigy - 2011-10-20 11:44

Go France, make them eat humble pie, prediction France by 1 point, both teams kicking drop goals every 5 min, either that or the French don't pitch on the day (quite possible as they are not the same quality team of years gone by) & the Brats have yet another easy game to claim a hollow victory against the weakest side ever to reach the WC final (fact).
