Cape Town - While the Springboks remain on course to become the first team to successfully defend the Webb Ellis Cup, the local scene is hotting up as well with the Currie Cup approaching its own playoff stage.
The final of the Currie Cup takes place on October 29, one week after the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup final in Auckland. If the Springboks are to go on to feature in that match, they will in all likelihood not be available to represent their respective provinces the following week, should they have reached the Currie Cup final.
However, there is the notion that if the Wallabies were to advance to the semi-final at the expense of the Boks, that it would add a welcome boost to the currently 'Bok-less' Currie Cup heading into the business end of the season.
According to Wednesday’s Die Burger, SARU commerical manager Andy Marinos stated that should the Boks endure an early elimination, they will be available for their provincial teams immediately without needing to rest, as they would be playing during the same period of time if they were still in New Zealand.
One team which has been reeling after the departure of players to the Bok squad, combined with the growing list of injuries, is Western Province.
Province have eight of their players in the Springbok squad in New Zealand and have already lost 20 players this season through injury.
Should they make it to the Currie Cup semi-finals, the early eliminated Boks will be motivated by the fact that they will have some glory to play for, albeit in consolation to the biggest prize in world rugby.
Although he would welcome back his Boks with open arms, Western Province coach, Allister Coetzee does not expect them any time soon.
“I think we (South Africa) are well on course (to defend the World Cup). We are winning tough matches and there is really no reason why we cannot make it.”
