Bench Sonny Bill - Wilson

Cape Town - Even though he may have put in a dominant display for the All Blacks in the unaccustomed role of wing, Sonny Bill Williams may yet reacquaint himself with the Eden Park bench.

According to former All Blacks wing, Stu Wilson, the imminent return of Israel Dagg and Cory Jane to the starting XV would shift Williams back to the bench.

"Jane is our top wing at the moment. He's the only one doing things with the ball in hand. He should carry on having a few drinks and a few (cigarettes) if it gets him into this kind of form.

"Sonny Bill only got a shot because Kahui was injured," Wilson told the New Zealand Herald.

Jane should pull rank as a "senior professional" to secure his place on the right wing, Wilson said.

Wilson also believes that new inclusions, Stephen Donald and Hosea Gear will have contrasting fortunes in their respective roles upon joining the squad.

He believes while Donald may be the much needed fill-in for Aaron Cruden, Gear may not feature in the rest of the competition altogether.

"He's (Gear) a few back from the bus stop. I just can't see (the coaches) going past guys who have played games in this competition to pick him."

Wilson went onto say that Cruden’s decision-making skills will be put to the test and will be vital in deciding one of the finalists at this year’s tournament in an already chaotic situation.

"The chaos will only get worse. It just gets worse and worse. We need a 10 who can say 'this is not working, what can we do differently. A 10's got to run the shop."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
