Former Bok wing: Kolbe should have started

Cape Town - Former Springbok wing Akona Ndungane believes that Cheslin Kolbe should have been given the No 14 jersey against the All Blacks in Wellington on Saturday.

Kolbe made his debut last weekend against the Wallabies in Brisbane when he came off the bench in the first half to replace the injured Makazole Mapimpi.

Mapimpi has since returned to South Africa with an injured knee, meaning that coach Rassie Erasmus was forced into finding a new right wing for this weekend.

While Kolbe was the logical choice, Erasmus has instead moved Jesse Kriel to right wing while Lukhanyo Am comes in at outside centre.

"I would have kept a guy like Cheslin out on the wing," Ndungane told SARugbymag.

"Especially against the All Blacks and with Jesse having not played there this season. Cheslin has done very well for his club in France and he primarily plays on the wing, so he is very comfortable there.

"Cheslin has a big heart and proved it many times for the Stormers. He has played against big guys and he cleverly goes for the ankles and manages to tackle them. He would never let the jersey down."

Kolbe also offers an option at fullback, where Willie le Roux has been retained.

Ndungane, meanwhile, played 11 Test matches for the Boks and was a member of the 2007 World Cup-winning squad.

Kick-off on Saturday is at 09:35 SA time.
