Wellington - All Black Dan Carter has been sidelined from the rugby field due to injury, and the rule applies to the basketball court too.

According to website, He was billed to play a game of three-on-three street basketball at Wellington's Queens Wharf on Friday.

Carter, along with Israel Dagg, Aaron Smith, and Sam Whitelock would face Kiwi basketballer Steven Adams from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

But Carter would have to sit the game out.

The calf injury that had him sidelined for the All Blacks would keep Carter in a refereeing/entertaining role at the basketball match.

All Blacks spokesperson Joe Locke on Wednesday confirmed Carter would be there, but not involved with the on-court action.

"It's not like it's play play - it's just fun games... but he'll be refereeing, hanging with the kids, or just cruising around," he said.

The "boots and hoops" challenge would be at Queens Wharf, outside the entrance to the TSB Arena, from 10:30 - 12:00, this Friday.

Carter was injured last week.

The strained calf would mean up to a month on the sideline, with a return date of September 7 for the Test against Argentina in Hamilton.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said the injury was "not a biggie", and "a nuisance more than anything else".

Carter has had calf problems in his left leg before but doesn't believe his lower legs are a problem area.
