Captain's run deadline for JJ

Cape Town - Springbok outside centre JJ Engelbrecht will be given until Friday's captain's run to prove his fitness ahead of the Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Engelbrecht sustained a knock to the leg in the Boks' 28-8 win over the Wallabies last weekend.

He was picked in the Bok starting team named on Wednesday, but bracketed with Jan Serfontein, who will fill in at outside centre should Engelbrecht fail his fitness test.

Initial talk was that Serfontein would then move to inside centre with skipper Jean de Villiers playing in the No 13 jersey.

However, coach Heyneke Meyer confirmed to the Beeld website that would not be the case as he wants his skipper to remain "close to the action".

Western Province's Juan de Jongh will provide cover on the bench if Engelbrecht fails to recover in time.

In order to win the Rugby Championship, South Africa must beat New Zealand with a four-try bonus point and at the same time prevent the Kiwis from getting any bonus points themselves.

Kick-off is at 17:00 on Saturday.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
