Roux backs 'manager' Meyer

Cape Town - Maties coach Chean Roux believes Heyneke Meyer is a superb coach, but also a "manager" who will get Springbok rugby on the right track.

Roux played under Meyer in 1999 when the latter was forwards coach at the Stormers. They have remained in contact since.

"For me there's no doubt that the correct appointment was made.

"You need a head coach that can talk to the players and the media, and then behind the scenes you need a number of workaholics. I almost want to label them data processors. They come up with all the ideas and plans. You discuss it with them and then convey it to all the players," Roux told Die Burger newspaper.

"I always use Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United's manager) as an example. He can't still be a good technical coach at 70, but no one knows about the 11 coaches that work under him.

"He has the aura to convey things to the players and to get the best out of them. I think we make a mistake to use the term 'coach'".

"Heyneke should be seen as a manager. What does the Springbok coach do? He has to get ideas and then manage the execution of it."

Roux also believes Meyer will be a key cog on a psychological front for the Boks.

"His approach is very much based on the psychological aspect of rugby. It's the way in which you carry something across to someone which makes the difference.

Roux was referring to his time with Meyer in 1999 at the Stormers.

"The forwards were eager to scrum even before they got to the scrum machine.

"They were never eager for scrumming beforehand. It takes a special person and touch to establish such an aptitude," said Roux.
