Cape Town - Rassie Erasmus looks set to become the South African Rugby Union's (SARU) new technical advisor which will see him be part of the Springbok coaching staff on a full-time basis.
The Rapport newspaper expects SARU to make this announcement on 27 January when the new Bok coach will also be announced.
This comes after Erasmus last week shocked the rugby fraternity by resigning from his post as senior professional coach of the Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU).
Erasmus's resignation at the WPRU is apparently due to differences between him and the union's top management.
Aside from working closely with the new Bok coach, Erasmus will also work with South Africa's national teams at all levels.
Heyneke Meyer (the senior professional coach at the Blue Bulls) and Gert Smal (forwards coach of Ireland) are the two favourites for the position of new Bok coach.
And according to Rapport, Meyer is SARU's preferred candidate. Meyer said he is keen to get the job and has already had talks with the Blue Bulls about the possibility of being released from his contract.
It is believed that the new Bok coaching position will be for a two-year period, unlike the previous tenure of four years. The new coach will also work on a much stricter performance basis and could easily be axed if the team fares poorly.
In further bad news for WP and Stormers fans, it appears as though their defence coach Jacques Nienaber will resign from his position to join Erasmus at SARU.
Springbok Sevens coach, Paul Treu, also looks set to be part of the Springboks' coaching new setup, presumably as backline coach.
