R1 000 to tackle a rugby ref!

Cape Town - R1 000 to any player who tackles the referee!

That's what a club rugby player in Gauteng told his team-mates at the weekend, Beeld reports.

Eben Olivier - a member of the Falcons Referees' Society - refereed a junior league match on a Youth League Rugby Day at Elsburg RFC last Saturday.

It was the main match of the day between the Under-19 teams of Vereeniging and Brakpan's junior clubs.

About ten minutes before the end of the match, Olivier sent a Vereeniging lock to the sin-bin for swearing at him three times. The assistant referee, Martin Swart, then heard a player say to his team-mates that he'll give them R1 000 if they tackle the referee.

Olivier said he thought it was an accident when a player ran into him, but 60 seconds later a player tackled him to the ground. Olivier then put an end to the match.

It was however not the only incident occurring on the day. In an earlier game, referee Eben Barnard was also verbally abused by fans.

The incidents are reportedly being investigated.
