Panesar trains with Waratahs

Sydney - Believe it or not, Monty Panesar sledges with the best of them.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald website, the English Test cricketer was at it again on Thursday but this time he was doing it in the company of 110kg rugby players and the sledge was of the physical, fitness-training sort.

Panesar, 29, was hauling a 40kg weight loaded on to a "sledge" and strapped around his waist at training with the Waratahs in Sydney.

The left-arm orthodox spinner, who is playing with Randwick-Petersham Cricket Club, has started doing the odd midweek training session with the Super Rugby franchise in an effort to improve his fitness and strength.

"I think more than anything when you're cross-fertilising in sports it stimulates your own thinking," Panesar said ahead of the session at Sydney Football Stadium.

"The (Waratahs') professionalism and their fitness levels are really high and ... I've been to their building and seen the facilities, it's just amazing to see what they provide and the facilities they've got and how professional they are in terms of their own sport."

Known for his work ethic, the spin bowler joined Waratahs No 8 Wycliff Palu and wing Afa Pakalani in running drills while the forwards and backs trained in separate groups.

The trio worked together for about 40 minutes before Panesar donned the sledge, dragging it up and down the field for 10 minutes.

Panesar, who was at one point England's top spin bowler, played his last Test match in 2009.
