Port Elizabeth - SARU president Oregan Hoskins on Wednesday officially opened the Windvogel and Isaac Wolfson Stadia in Port Elizabeth following the upgrading of both facilities.
Thanks to the financial contributions of SA Rugby and the Lions Trust, who each contributed R1 million to the project, both facilities have been completed and are ready to be used by the respective local rugby clubs in the region.
"These are multi-purpose sports grounds, but the rugby fraternity in the area will have priority use of the upgraded fields," said Andr Homan, SA Rugby's project manager for the Lions Tour.
"These grounds will host many of the township clubs in Port Elizabeth, both for training and the playing of games. The grounds belong to the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM).
"The NMBM Council has given a guarantee that these facilities will be properly maintained, while caretakers will be appointed to manage the usage and maintenance, as well as provide security."
"The Lions are delighted and honored to be part of this Legacy Programme", said John Feehan, chief executive of the Lions.
"We hope that it will bring years of enjoyment to the many rising rugby stars of the Port Elisabeth region".
The Isaac Wolfson Stadium which is located in the heart of Kwazakhele Township has a very rich history with regards to black rugby in South Africa.
The facility is used by the Zwide United, PE Villagers, St. Cyprian, and Sunday Stars Rugby clubs. Several schools also use the Isaac Wolfson Stadium such as the Phakamisa High, Thamsanqa High, Mzontsundu High and Seyisi Primary Schools.
