Mitchell suspects on the run

Johannesburg - Two men who allegedly broke into Lions coach John Mitchell's house and stabbed him were still on the run, Gauteng police said on Monday.

"We are searching for these men on house robbery and attempted murder charges," Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said.

He said the men entered Mitchell's house in Hyde Park through an open window on Saturday night and demanded money from him.

A fight then broke out and Mitchell was stabbed in the right thigh and hand. The men fled with two laptops, cellphones, three music players and various household appliances.

Fellow New Zealand-born coach Wayne Taylor was in another room when he heard a commotion and ran to where the men had fled, before phoning police.

He managed to recover the laptops and some other items which the men had dropped on their way out.

Mitchell was taken to Sandton clinic on Saturday night and discharged on Sunday morning, Maphakela said.

A statement from the Lions rugby union website said that Mitchell would return to work on Monday.

"Mitchell will be back at the office tomorrow where we will give him our full support and encouragement," Golden Lions Rugby Union president Kevin de Klerk said in the statement.

"We have rallied around both John and Wayne during this terrible time and have placed them both in new accommodation for the time being while we find them a new permanent residency."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
