Media slam 'bonehead' Hore

2012-11-26 11:46

Wellington - The apparent punching by All Blacks hooker Andrew Hore of Welshman Bradley Davies has revived an unwanted reputation for thuggish behaviour among the world champions, New Zealand media said on Monday.

Hore appeared to catch Davies with a blow from behind early in New Zealand's 33-10 Test victory over Wales in Cardiff on Saturday, and has been cited by the International Rugby Board (IRB) for striking.

Veteran New Zealand rugby commentator Keith Quinn said Hore could expect a lengthy ban for the incident, which resulted in Davies being stretchered off the field and taken to hospital for precautionary examinations.

"Suddenly, just after the start of the game, there was this boneheaded act from Andrew Hore... I expect they'll throw the book at him," Quinn told Radio New Zealand.

Dominion Post rugby columnist Toby Robson said that with only one Test remaining in the All Blacks tour, against England on Saturday, Hore may as well pack his bags and return to New Zealand immediately.

"Whatever he was trying to achieve - let's give him the benefit of the doubt till his case is heard - the hooker must be handed a lengthy suspension," he wrote.

"It is an embarrassing situation for the New Zealand Rugby Union, with chief executive Steve Tew spending much of the past three weeks in Europe extolling the virtues of the All Blacks' brand."

The New Zealand Herald's Gregor Paul said: "Andrew Hore's act of stupidity will have confirmed in every Northern Hemisphere mind the long-held notion of the All Blacks as perennial thugs."

With Hore likely to be suspended for the England Test and Keven Mealamu also in doubt due to injury, the All Blacks have called in Hika Elliot as a reinforcement hooker to back up rookie Dane Coles.

Reports said pivot Tom Taylor had also joined the squad, since star flyhalf Dan Carter is still under an injury cloud after an Achilles injury forced him out of the Wales Test.

Bonehead, Hore, hooker, head job,etc what's going on in rugby?

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-11-26 12:25

Hore comes with a bit of a reputation outside of rugby aswell.Apparently he was convicted once for shooting seals from a boat just off the Otago shoreline when coming from a fishing trip someone wrote. So clearly his antics has no place in rugby. The All Blacks generally pride themselves in being one of the most disciplined teams in rugby's top tier nations. So allot of the All Blacks would be embarrassed by this guy Hore and what he'd done.

@Sean do you always believe everything you read? If you do you are a bonehead

      Caleb - 2012-11-26 22:42

Sean is infact correct! He did get convicted for shooting a particular type of seal of the coastline. What an idiot, almost as idiotic as this brain explosion, he deserves to get a couple of months for this, and is not how the AB's play, or sort things out n the field.

....Nice. At last some-one has said it: "....the notion of the All Blacks as perennial thugs..." So penalise him as well as for kneeing Davis in the head. And where was the match referee? There were a couple of other "incidents" worth looking into. Then in future matches put their thuggish actions under the spotlight. They have come to believe (from experience in other matches) that they are protected by the IRB and its officials.

Ban him for a year of all rugby.. Attacking another player from behind when player doesn't expect. A shame for rugby. - 2012-11-26 12:13

Reminds me of Bakkies giving Jimmy Cowan a head job at Soweto I think it was.

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-11-26 12:29

I was a cheap shot, crass, thuggery and cowardly aswell. He should be ashamed of himself.Life time ban for Hore I'd say.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-11-26 14:46

Remember he is an AB. Probably ban him for half a game... Now if it were a South African they would want to shoot him at dawn.

  • robert.p.gemmell - 2012-11-26 12:19

this is one of the dumbest things i have seen in rugby. he should of been red carded and it would of been a very interesting game from the 2nd minute with 14 men. lets just hope the citing commission can slap him with a ban sufficient for this dirty play. he is lucky i am not involved in the commission as i can promise you he'll be lucky to wear a rugby jersey again foul play has no place in international rugby or any rugby maybe we should let Davies line him up and give him a good smack to the head and make him feel the pain

  • steve.vanrooyen - 2012-11-26 12:30

  • cape.maori - 2012-11-26 12:38

Andrew Hore was cited and will be punished! Be that as it may, the mighty ALL BLACKS are still the world champions and Nr 1 on the IRB rankings! Finish en klaar!

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-11-26 15:25

You cannot be called world champions unless you win the title in a fair contest.

      simone.dechandra.7 - 2012-11-26 17:03

And the fact remains you are not and will never be a New Zealander ever

      Caleb - 2012-11-26 23:07

@ stirrer- any excuse to make up for your countrymens failings at the WC, fact of the matter is you had your cvhances, didnt take them and now your crying unfairness, you and the rest of your hypocritic countrymen sound like a lttle girls. Oooh its so unfair, we lost at the world cup because we couldnt score tries its soooooo unfair. Jeez, get a grip.

      donavan.boshoff - 2012-11-27 10:20

@caleb. practice what you preach chopper, we are constantly being reminded of the "food poisoning" aka all blacks choked incident from 1995!! How many Boks have been cited on this tour?

      Caleb - 2012-11-28 05:12

@ dono, how many Springboks have been cited on other tours where the ab's have not, your statement does not mean anything.

  • heiku.staude - 2012-11-26 13:45

So a hooker named hore gave somebody a surprise head job? For free?

  • heinrich.badenhorst.395 - 2012-11-26 15:17

What Andrew Hore did was stupid, so was Bakkies, Eben Etzebeth,Shalk Burger, Adam Thompson.Scott Higganbothan, Dean Greyling, Brad Thorn, Dylan Hartley, Jamey Heaslip, Quade Cooper etc etc etc. You can continue for pages. The point is all sportsmen will get a rush of blood sometimes. Remember Monty and the official that he bumped when he still played for the Dragons, I think. The point, don't try and pin "thuggery" dirty play whatever on a specific team. Hore will get his day for being a "bonehead" just like all the illustrious gentlemen that did something similar.

      Caleb - 2012-11-26 23:13

Very well said, makes sense and he should be dealt with severely.

      rocco.dewet.3 - 2012-11-27 03:55

Yes, there have been dirty players in all international rugby teams going back more than a century. And clean olayers having a moment of poor judgment. I suspect Andrew Hore was reacting to something that happened earlier, perhaps in a ruck. But acts that that should be severely punished, whether it is perpetrated by an All Black or a Bok or anybody else.

      Caleb - 2012-11-27 05:57

On the aerial footage you can see the guy that he decked change directions three or four times to obstruct Hore in getting to the ruck, thats the reason he nailed him. Dont get me wrong, not an acceptable reason by any stretch. The vid can be seen here
