Rose pulled from Lions line-up

2009-06-03 15:27

Johannesburg - Earl Rose has been withdrawn from the Golden Lions squad by Springbok coach Peter de Villiers and will not play against the touring British and Irish Lions at Coca-Cola Park on Wednesday night.

This follows a request from De Villiers that Rose, who was selected on the bench, be given the opportunity to start.

However, the Golden Lions management stuck to their guns and permission for Rose, as a member of the Springbok squad, to play in the match was withdrawn by De Villiers.

Bok Media Manager Anthony Mackaiser has confirmed that Rose will no longer be involved in Wednesday's game.

The Lions had originally named Rose on the bench, with Louis Ludik down to start in the No 15 jersey and veteran Bok Andre Pretorius at flyhalf.

Rose failed to turn up for training with the Lions on Tuesday, after being named in both the Springbok and Emerging Bok squads to face the British Lions later this month. The understanding by the Golden Lions was that he would be given the opportunity to practice and play with the Golden Lions this week.

Shandre Frolick has been named on the Golden Lions' bench in place of Rose.

It is clear from the latest incident that De Villiers and Rose have a very close bond and will certainly raise eyebrows.

On Monday, after being questioned about the selection of the out-of-form Rose in the Bok team to face the British Lions, De Villiers likened the uncapped back Earl Rose to golf legend Tiger Woods.

De Villiers, in defending some of his selections - such as Ruan Pienaar's inclusion despite a lengthy lay-off and Rose - produced a real pearler.

"Ruan (Pienaar) is the Tiger Woods of rugby and I believe Earl Rose is in the same class," he said.

Revised Golden Lions squad:

Louis Ludik, Michael Killian, Jannie Boshoff, Doppies la Grange, Dusty Noble, Andre Pretorius, Jano Vermaak, Willem Alberts, Franco van der Merwe, Cobus Grobbelaar (captain), Willem Stoltz, Brad Mockford, Gert Muller, Willie Wepener, Lawrence Sephaka.

Replacements: Ethienne Reynecke, JC Janse van Rensburg, Ernst Joubert, Todd Clever, Chris Jonck, Walter Venter, Shandre Frolick.

  • scud - 2009-06-03 15:37

They might as well pull him from the line Down...

  • JIMBO - 2009-06-03 15:38

TIGER ROSE AWSOME!!!!!!!!! HA HA best one yet from PDV have to say i do find it a little shocking though. HA HA HA

  • Franco - 2009-06-03 15:43

I don't know whether to laugh or cry!?!?

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 15:48

    Definitely something fishy here....

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 15:50

I'm a GOLDEN LION supporter. And as a LION supporter I want as many SPRINGBOKS in my team as possible... But making Earl Rose a SPRINGBOK before the likes of Louis Ludik and Cobus Grobbelaar is a disgrace! He doesn't even get picked for the LIONS best fifteen but Peter want's to select him for the SPRINGBOKS.

  • Mike Ambassador - 2009-06-03 15:51

LOL Tiger Woods my butt!! if u say so Div.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 15:51

Well if PDV really wanted the SA rugby supporter to understand his vision he would have left Tiger ROSE... even on the bench for tonights game. Also more importantly he is indirectly shooting himself in the foot, by now having an even a weaker under-prepared Golden Lions team play against the B&I Lions.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 15:51

Snor is just a total idiot. We all know why he got the job, but he can at least try to act and speak intelligently. With all the Bok talent available, anyone can pick a bok team, yet he is the only one that will include Rose. Why cant we just get a decent coach!!!!

  • Jayden - 2009-06-03 15:53

I dont know, i have never seen Tiger Woods mess up especially time and time again. Clearly Div doesn't watch any golf. Unfortunately he missed a great S14 aswell. Kirshner, Vermaak, final!!!!!! Jay

  • Japes - 2009-06-03 15:54

He was never picked for the squad!!!!

  • Gtr - 2009-06-03 15:56

IN a village full of idiots, you'll still be the village idiot. I'm shocked that you can say things like that. Is there anything else you can say that will amuse us?

  • gus - 2009-06-03 15:56

I think PdV is smoking socks again. What is his eternal love affair with this 78kg tackle bag carrier?

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 15:56

well - the article is hard to understand - De villiers withdrew the request, yet Earl Rose is not playing???/Ja well no fine! Listen Div, Earl Rose is inconsistent, and not a great player even when he is on song!. He certainly does not deserve a Bok cap, and this smacks of the usual political selction story again!

  • Andre - 2009-06-03 15:57

Thanks Peter, you did the golden Lions a favour ! ! ! Keep passenger Rose away from where the big boys are playing

  • Phil Tregoning - 2009-06-03 15:57

Maybe he has nude photo's of PDV

  • Mike - 2009-06-03 15:59

Seriously, how embarrassing is this. Our current couch has done and said some weird things in the past but man this has got to take the cake. Rose was given ample opportunity to impress at the Lions and yet he failed to show any sort of form or talent that might interest any national yet alone provincial coach. Go for it Div, play him in the test matches so we can see this great talent you speak off because no rugby fan or coach I have heard of except for you rate this player at the moment. In fact if you so impressed why not bet your job on his performances!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 16:00

Eish - A rose by any other name (Tiger)is NOT a rose. DIv playing politics - we need a proper Bok coach in SA! Earl Rose is best qualified to warm a Non-bok Bench!! Poor ol Div is on the Mountain Grass again!

  • J.V..A - 2009-06-03 16:03

The only thing Earl Rose has in common with Tiger Woods , is 2 Arms and 2 Legs.

  • Alan - 2009-06-03 16:03

What a joke!!!! Earl Rose = Tiger Woods???? Where can I get some of that stuff that Peter is on?

  • Paddy - 2009-06-03 16:05

Nothing personal against Rose but for heavens sake! He shouldn't even be on the Lions bench let alone in the Springbok squad. Are he and de Villiers related? Smacks of nepotism or worse.....

  • Paul - 2009-06-03 16:07

Blast --I got really excited when i read "Rose pulled from line-up" -dammit it was the wrong line-up ---Can someone pull him from the Boks lineup too.....

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 16:08

LOL @ Phil.T. Rose is the Springbok Nude Guys photographer! Er Div, where exactly on this Planet did you see Earl Rose do something rugby-wise to get rated? He is a third class player, and completely outclassed by the other talent we have in SA. Maybe Div has a side bet on the BI Lions?

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 16:08

What an Insult to Tiger...... but I supose they both have handicaps, but Tigers handicap is a good thing.. Earl Rose's handicap is deffinately not good..

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 16:11

Struth! maybe we should bring back Mallet! Ah no - I kow what it is, Julius has been coaching Div in public utterances. OK, i'm off for some Nando's

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 16:17

Dunno if Div is high on Earl Grey or Five Roses? Seems to me like Joko.

  • KPK - 2009-06-03 16:22

and I was wondering what happened to my Mountain Cabbages! Give em back Div!

  • Johan - 2009-06-03 16:24

Well you all said the same about adi Jacobs last year, and look where he went!

  • jm - 2009-06-03 16:26

PDV can still comply with transformation by picking Zane and it will be a merrit selection and cover himself at the same time. Why not choose a player like Zane who is on top form??? PDV you are up to something. Maybe he knows something too about the back seat of a car??? JM

  • Dewald - 2009-06-03 16:28

    Totally agree with assegaai!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 16:29

PDV is bang dat sy Tiger Rose die res van SA reg bewys met sy vrotsige spel

  • Johann - 2009-06-03 16:30

As a serious Lions (Transvaal) supporter, this was the best news in years. At least we have an exellent opportunity to win a match, without a clown in it that even his own team mates do not know what stupidity he is on to next! So all SA supporters are going to hate him now, not only Lions supporters!!!! LOL

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 16:30

DIV is obviousely in a kahoots with the Cape Flat Mafia for the helium he's smoken. Its a disgrace! Sies man Pietertjie het jou ma jou nie beter geleer nie!

  • Boerseun - 2009-06-03 16:44

Relax boys, this is Africa after all......

  • Bluetifu Blue Bulls - 2009-06-03 16:44

I didn't know Tiger Woods played rugby but he is clearly not very good at it.

  • Philmonk - 2009-06-03 16:44

I agree. I'm totally convinced that Rose has some dirt on P-Divvy! Nude photo's, a sex tape, and, or most like he's supplying Divvy with fine herb!

  • scud - 2009-06-03 16:48

You Folks have not seen anything yet, we will see what you will say when Smit is given the No 15 jersy...

  • Bluetiful Blue Bulls - 2009-06-03 16:57

You can just see the professional rugby writers exercising all the restraint they can muster to say something like this: "Of all selection blunders ever perpetrated by Bok selectors since the beginning of Time and the Universe, the selection of Earl Rose in the 2009 Bok Lineup reaches unfathomable depths of shame to the mighty Springbok jersey... etc.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 16:59

Ahahahahahahaha ... Tiger Woods of rugby!!!!

  • Captain - 2009-06-03 17:02

Im going out to buy a gun to shoot myself, I just don't see chance for the torture awaiting us when Rose starts his first game.

  • Van - 2009-06-03 17:09

Perhaps PDV is correct - that Earl Rose may have some ability in golf - perhaps he should try that and keep away from rugby. Tiger Woods will definately be better at fullback or nr. 10 that Rose -even without knowing anything about rugby.

  • Willie Theunissen - 2009-06-03 17:12

I think that Earl has family in PAGAD, and PDV woke up one morning with a horse head in his bed...Rose is a trouble maker. He bliksems his girlfriend, he was arrested for dealing, he started the shit with Leon Boshoff and now this. He's in every single national team this series. SA 15, Emerging boks and Springboks. He definitely knows some people that know some people....

  • Ron - 2009-06-03 17:29

We might get away with a poor selection against the Lions but in the Tri-nations we have to play the in form players. That means that based on current form Morne Steyn and Zane Kirshner should be in the starting line up.This crap about team dynamics is absolute nonsense. With respect to Piennar and Rose they have only played a handfull of super 14 matches and are out of form.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-03 17:43

What does P-divvy, Earl Rose and Ricky Jan have in common, all of them were selected because of the colour of their skin not their ability to perform a job. Welcome to affirmative action gravy train Heyneke Meyer, Stefan Terblanche and Jano Vermaak

  • Paul - 2009-06-03 17:45

I think that Earl Rose is one of the finest Rugby talents we have in this fine country of ours......PS: I also smoke my socks....often
