Cape Town - The British and Irish Lions have started their tour with a bang by thrashing a hapless Barbarians outfit 59-8 in Hong Kong on Saturday.

The Lions, who led 23-3 at half-time, ran in eight tries against clearly inferior opponents.

Wales scrumhalf Mike Phillips, who scored a brace of tries, was named Man of the Match.

The Lions will now head to Australia ahead of their three-Test series against the Wallabies, with their first tour game there against the Force in Perth on Wednesday.
