Lions to get solid game-time

2012-11-27 17:42

Cape Town - Despite not playing Super Rugby, the Lions will have no shortage of game time next season after their 2013 fixture list was revealed on Tuesday.

The Johannesburg-based union was forced into scheduling a series of friendly matches for next year after the South African Rugby Union (SARU) replaced them with the Southern Kings for next year's Southern Hemisphere showpiece event.

In what will effectively be known as the Lions Challenge, they will play matches against teams from afar as Russia, America, France, Samoa and Namibia. Matches will take place locally as well as abroad.

They will also play friendly games against local Super Rugby teams.

The games will serve as good preparation for their Super Rugby promotion-relegation series, when they will come up against the lowest ranked South African Super Rugby team.

The union said on its Facebook page an official Lions Challenge tournament launch will be made shortly.

Lions' fixture list for 2013 (excluding Currie Cup fixtures):

19 January: Lions v Russia - Coca-Cola Park, Johannesburg

      thomas.cannon.712 - 2012-11-28 02:20

Feb 9th is the one I am interested in!! The Lions without their stars against the new super stars from the EC!! The Kings better not get beaten or the rest of us might think they are not ready for S15!!!

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-11-28 07:48

I think I'll go for this one: 2 February: Lions v Bulls - Orlando Stadium, Soweto Could be epic.

      david.w.bakker - 2012-11-27 19:05

40 thousand lions supporters at the stadium that day

      ruan.smith.14 - 2012-11-27 19:21

      francois.v.eeden.3 - 2012-11-28 00:13

that game will fill ellis park to the brim

      simone.dechandra.7 - 2012-11-28 07:05

I'm going just to boo the kings

  • pieter.thefuture - 2012-11-27 18:15

I am not sure if the sharks and the stormers will play their strongest teams against the lions, the bulls and the cheetahs may during their preparation for the super 15, but the coastal guys will most likely send a second string to play as it is smack in the middle of a tough and overcrowded schedule.

      pieter.thefuture - 2012-11-27 18:17

especially as they will be without the use of their springboks.

  • vic.hammond.77 - 2012-11-27 18:16

I look forward to the Lions versus Kings on 9th Feb. Hope Kings get a hiding before there Super 15 kick-off !!

      michael.kleber.376 - 2012-11-27 18:50

i will support every team that plays against the kings even the NZ and Ozzie teams , not patriotic i know but they dont deserve my support , if they can beat the lions in the relegation matches i might reconsider

      ruan.smith.14 - 2012-11-27 18:54

      I hope not!

      ruan.smith.14 - 2012-11-27 18:57

Also Michael, you can support who ever you want to, but backing overseas teams instead of a local one, is a "cut off your nose to spite your face" type of a move really!!

  • henry.kruger.520 - 2012-11-27 18:16

This looks good if I a may say. I hope it will be broad cast, but probably SARU will have a say and not be. Lions will probably take the Super Rugby trophy in 2014 after demolishing the Kings, who will be down and out by the time relegation games come.

  • suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-11-27 18:26

They will probably play that Challenge for the next 10 years because they are consistent at what they do, they were mediocre for the last 10 years

      ruan.smith.14 - 2012-11-27 18:58

      Totally with you!!!

      steven.rhode.311 - 2012-11-27 19:08

No Currie Cup in 2013? Why not? Shame man!!!!! Cheetahs too strong for you. EP PALUKAS!!

      ruan.smith.14 - 2012-11-27 19:26

Steven, its getting old now, you know that EP rugby has only started functioning again the last 4 odd years, compare that to the financially backed unions, who have been buying players for years, and then think for yourself, hmmm Cheetahs prob wouldnt have lost in any case, not at this stage anyway.

      steven.rhode.311 - 2012-11-27 21:34

Ag Ruan, enjoy your first and last S15!

  • johan.botes.906 - 2012-11-27 18:32

Will the games be broadcasted on Supersport???

  • - 2012-11-27 18:54

Please not let SABC 2 or 3 cover their games.

  • christelle.delport - 2012-11-27 19:04

Lions, I will be there supporting you. GO LIONS!!

  • nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-11-27 19:16

Looking forward to these games, I just hope that in 2014 when we play super rugby we can somehow keep this tournament going as well. Will be an awesome way to build our depth and keep players! GO LIONS!!!

  • chez.kri - 2012-11-27 20:09

As my family and I supported them at Ellis park this year, so we will next year. GO LIONS!!!

  • dawie.zwiegelaar.1 - 2012-11-27 21:31

Michael,i agree but lets rather put ut like this.......i will never support the anc and watson alliance.......i wud rather cut my nose than vote anc

  • paul.vieira.7792 - 2012-11-27 22:31

As a Bulls supporter I will also support the Lions, especially against the politically assisted EP princesses!

  • grant.stevens.54390 - 2012-11-27 23:05

Looking forward to these games! What a change for the best.

  • quenton.vanniekerk - 2012-11-28 00:42

Lions 4 life. WE WILL BE BACK IN 2014!!!

  • jacque.wagner.9 - 2012-11-28 04:26

Looking forward to the 9 Feb game ! Can't wait !!

  • brionyl.french - 2012-11-28 05:19

    CANT WAIT!!!!!

  • christo.piek.5 - 2012-11-28 08:28

Why do we have to play against the Kings?? This gives them legitimacy and they don't deserve this at all. It is like dating your ex-wife the day after the divorce case. Let them rather play against a traditional healers team from rural Eastern Cape!

  • unclejb.vansiths - 2012-11-28 10:51

Cheetahs and Lions should merge and go back to the good old days of the Cats, they've had 10 years and still lack depth and are constantly being under performers. Let the Kings have a chance to prove themselves, plus rugby is desperate for such opportunities in the region.

      rassie.venter.5 - 2012-11-28 15:27

Ep had there chance they did so badly and selected a Board that robbed them and with all theinhouse fighting all there wheels came off but I dont think that they have learnt from there mistakes Why do I say that, look who they selected to lead them !!!!for them it is not the EP but the money and there is plenty for the moment.

  • denepaul - 2012-11-28 11:11

Absolutely - I'm not a lions supporter but will definitely want to go and watch some of these games. I hope they will sort out the park and ride issues.

  • louis.bensch.31 - 2012-11-28 12:12

This is great news, cant wait for Feb the 9th, gonna kick some useless queens butts!!

  • louis.bensch.31 - 2012-11-28 12:20

Boohoo!!! I can already hear kots se pa complaining about why they did not have something like this in the past for the queens...

      nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-11-28 13:05

my thoughts exactly, why didn't they put this together as part of their development program and to keep players, but the pukes always takes the easy way out it seems, doesn't want to work for things, just want to "demand"!

  • adeblocq - 2012-11-28 16:41

Really hope these are televised! Gonna be entertaining games!
