Lions reveal new signings

2012-11-22 11:01

Johannesburg - The Golden Lions have signed a host of new players for the 2013 season, the union said on Thursday.

The new players were already involved in current pre-season planning, assistant coach Johan Ackermann said in a statement.

"I am very happy these players have decided to join us and further their rugby careers here at the Lions," Ackermann said.

"I am looking forward to working with them as I saw potential in each and every one of them."

Lionel Cronje, Franco Mostert, Jacques van Rooyen, Robbie Coetzee, Hugo Kloppers, JJ Breedt, Stokkies Hanekom and Kobus de Kock were named as the eight players to have recently joined the union.

"I trust they will feel at home at the Lions and enjoy their time on and off the field. I also believe that they will work hard and make our Lions supporters proud," Ackermann said.

He said the new signings would form part of the team participating in the Lions Challenge series, taking place from January to August 2013, and some of them would also be part of the union's Currie Cup campaign.

Great stuff, if you look at the Springbok output at the Lions, it was a good move from these players.

The JJ Breedt, is he the son or "klein seun" of Jannie Breedt who use to play for Transvaal?

  • charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-11-22 11:21

What's the point??? So the contracted players are going to clean the stadium each week until Currie Cup starts in June?

      christo.piek.5 - 2012-11-22 11:54

Why don't you change the "win" to prick. Absolute idiot!!

      david.w.bakker - 2012-11-22 13:03

The point. so that they players can show what they can do and groom them into great players. I thought that would be obvious, but seeing all your comments regarding the Lions I realise that you really are "DUMB" and stupid. You must be Cheeky's big buddy

      louis.bensch.31 - 2012-11-22 13:44

Look guys, it's Charles Dumdwitt again!!! Lions will play AND win more games than the Kings this year... We are not going to sit in a corner and cry untill someone come and saes us like the Queens did... We are going to take young talent en develope them, unlike the queens that have to import talent and still can't hold on to their youngsters... Like they have done for 100years.

      lesbeen - 2012-11-22 18:38

      This coming season ofcourse....

Awesome news this! Looking forward watching the Lions play next year against some international competition, going to be great! As for poor Charles and his comments on here, must be VERY frustrating if your team is promoted to super15 status, and still players prefer playing at the Lions, says a lot about their faith in u're puke team :) GO LIONS!!!

      suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-11-22 18:56

the so called players that no one knows and cares about except those loosers at lion park i mean elis park whatever they call it these days, or may be loosers park

      nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-11-22 19:40

that is exactly what i mean suidlander, even with the ocean and better lifestyle and the fact that you have one season in super rugby, still with all that, not even the unknown players want to sign with you, hahahahahahahahahahaha

  • john.latilla - 2012-11-23 08:57

I can't wait until the Queens are history and the Lions are back where they ought to be. But wait - maybe to keep those friggin watsons happy SARU will come up with a reverse promotion relegatioin system where the top finishing SA side goes down. Hell it would be no more illogical than the current farce!! And no I'm NOT a Lions fan! Just hate all the SARU shenanigans to keep Pukesons happy. WTF!!

  • frederick.vanzyl - 2012-11-23 09:33

Same old, same old. Lions rebuilding AGAIN, just when we got a proper team for the first time in years, it's been destroyed by SARU and we have to start grooming new young talent for other teams. Think Louis Ludik, Willem Alberts, Jacques Fourie, Elton Jantjies, Pat Cilliers, Jaco Taute, Schalk Britz.....The list is endless.

      louis.bensch.31 - 2012-11-23 13:07

I agree Frederick, and that is normally where these players play the best rugby of their carreers

  • jco.vanrooyen - 2012-11-23 09:53
