Lions quash Strauss rumour

2012-08-31 14:45

Cape Town - Lions president Kevin de Klerk has denied reports that Josh Strauss will be loaned out to the Crusaders for the 2013 Super Rugby season.

Social networks reported on Friday that seven-time champion Crusaders had snapped up the loose forward on loan from the Lions, who will be replaced by the Southern Kings in Super Rugby next year.

The Lions have already lost the services of prop Jacobie Adriaanse (Scarlets, Wales), lock Ruan Botha (WP), lock Paul Willemse (Blue Bulls) and Caylib Oosthuizen (Free State Cheetahs) in recent weeks.

According to the website, De Klerk stressed that only flyhalf Elton Jantjies will be allowed to be loaned out next season as he is the only contracted player who has a Super Rugby clause in his contract.

The Lions currently have 26 players committed until October 2013, with Strauss being one of them.

Lions contracted players:

JC Janse van Rensburg, CJ van der Linde, Callie Visagie, Pat Cilliers, Hendrik Roodt, Franco van der Merwe, Derick Minnie, Jaco Kriel, Michael Rhodes, Stephan Greeff, Josh Strauss, Warren Whiteley, Michael Bondesio, Ross Cronje, Whestley Moolman, Elton Jantjies (with contract clause), Guy Cronje, Jaco Taute, Alwyn Hollenbach, Lionel Mapoe, Dylan des Fountain, Bradley Moolman, Deon van Rensburg, Deon Helberg, Andries Coetzee, James Kamana

would have been good experience for Josh if it's true, but well, at least he is staying a LION :)

If they do loan him I guess I just found my new Super Rugby team for 2013!!

But we have seen in recent years that contracts mean nothing! If a club realy want a player...they can get him for example Willem Alberts's move to the Sharks, etc.

Loan all the players out at a cost, just nothing to go to Kings and then that way we can get income for them till we meet in next years curry cup and start all over again.

Please Mr Coetzee.....make a loan deal for Jantjes at the Stormers....thank you.

they will probably only loan to the Bulls & the Sharks, the unions that supported them in the voting :)

Pity the players have to suffer. Imagine the experience he could pick up playing for a team like that under the captainship of Richie MacCaw.

Welcome to the Kings Elton, what a luck for EP!

de Klerk use your head. Loan out all your players during the S15 and allow them to get good game time. Then at the end of the season assemble the team to play against the Kings and send them back to the vodacom cup where they belong.

This is an honest question: Who will you (LION supporters) be cheering for in the 2013 Super 15? Thank you for your help.

All the teams playing against S.A teams.

Kevin should have another look at the contracts with his players. If the Lions can not honour their part of the contract (to give players access to super 15 matches), the Lions are in default. So the players can leave the franchise whenever they want.

If this is the case then a local side has missed trick here. With the right guidance and career path, he has the potential and leadership ability to fill the leadership vacuum in the Bok setup and maybe even go on to captain the Boks. Hopefully it won't be too late before someone eventually recognizes it.
