Kockott heading to WP?

2010-08-16 14:36

Cape Town - If rumours doing the rounds in Durban are to be believed, scrumhalf Rory Kockott will be playing for Western Province next season.

columnist Mike Greenaway indicated last week that the Sharks No 9 was in talks with Western Province with a view to joining them next year.

Given that his shares in Durban have fallen dramatically over the course of the 2010 season, as pointed out by, the news may not come as a shock to fans. Charl McLeod has been Sharks coach John Plumtree's preferred choice in the Currie Cup this season.

The Sharks have already lost the services of Ulster-bound Ruan Pienaar, and should Kockott leave too, the Durban-based outfit would find themselves short of options in the scrumhalf position with the inaugural Super 15 looming.

    Looking forward to it!

  • Frik - 2010-08-16 13:46

  • Shame - 2010-08-16 13:56

He will be the 3rd choice scrumhalf, behind January!

  • Kuppy - 2010-08-16 13:59

Yes he would do well with the Stormers, the sharks can have Ricky Januarie for nothing.

  • uhm - 2010-08-16 14:00

but then WP would sit with Hoffman , Duvenhage, Kockott, Januarie ... so would this move really pay off?? although I really rate Kockott

  • piepies - 2010-08-16 14:01

  • Tana - 2010-08-16 14:02

This guy is talented. I am wondering why the Sharks aren't utilizing him effectively. His combination with lwazi Mvovo and Ruan Pienaar impressed me in their Super 14 game where they thrashed the Stormers. If he will join the Stormers, the Western province franchise will be a lot more dangerous than it currently is...

  • Taetjo - 2010-08-16 14:04

Don't forget Lwazi Mvovo too... This Sharks team has under-utilized talent!

  • STORMER - 2010-08-16 14:04

That means that Hoffman must be moving....and that would be a pity, as I feel he is better than Duvenage. Conrad Hoffman has to be given a long run at 9....(he also has some talent at 10....but with Grant, Cronje and the U21 Van Aswegen - who is a prodigous talent) I fear Hoffman might be leaving. If they allllllllll stay with us - where would Ricky go on the rankings?

  • Miela - 2010-08-16 14:05

Please NO .... We dont want him !!! No place for arrogant 'snotkoppe' in WP

  • Georgie - 2010-08-16 14:08

Yes! C'mon Rory. WP jou lekka ding!

  • Jan - 2010-08-16 14:09

They can keep him. With the likes of Dewald Duvenhage and Conrad Hofmann, who needs this guy in his squad? I think Smitty had this chop in mind when he said Luke was the "cancer" of the team

  • Koos Kaap - 2010-08-16 14:11

  • CowBoyJ@ck - 2010-08-16 14:12

As if he will make the starting line-up in WP!! He is a great player, but he should fight for his spot at the Sharks. You dont just pack it in when you dont start a game or two.... Come on rory, a little competition never hurt anyone!

  • Aitsa - 2010-08-16 14:12

What!?! Keep this guy please - unwanted in Cape Town; maybe fits the Sharks idea of scrumhalf play...

  • GW - 2010-08-16 14:16

He cant make the starting line up for the Sharks, why on gods earth would his service be needed in the WP camp? Please keep him.

  • nog 'n has-been - 2010-08-16 14:17

....hy is net so windgat soos die WP pooooofters... .. hy sal maklik daar inpas... ....en daar koop Rassie toe nog 'n "has-been".. Bwwhaa ha ha ha ..!!

  • greg - 2010-08-16 14:21

The Manchester City of Rugby is ................

  • Staalburgher - 2010-08-16 14:22

Why would he do that? He is asking for trouble trying to vie with golden-boy January.

  • Garreth - 2010-08-16 14:22

great news. now we (province) can get rid of january. and kockott could could be dewalt's second.

  • another mercenary..?? - 2010-08-16 14:28 Kockott is going to play for the Stormbarians...?? ...another mercenary... ....wel done Rassie...!! ..why doesnt Rassie sommer buy te rest of the Bok team as well..?? ...maybe they will then win some cups... ..He he he ..!!!

  • Sharks forever - 2010-08-16 14:29

With Jano Vermaak joining the Sharks for the Super 15 next year, who needs Kockott? Charl Mcleod has been kicking his ass for a long time now.

  • Anti - 2010-08-16 14:38

The Sharks can keep Kockott and his truck full of yellow cards!

  • shaunie boy - 2010-08-16 14:40

As a sharks supporter im will be happy if he decides to leave. He is one of the most selfish player ive seen at the sharks for a while now, he's the same as an ex player we used to have in craig davidson. Started very promisingly but after a few rave reviews started to think that he's bigger than the team. But i guess from provinces point of view anyone is better than Januarie. Good luck

  • Cookie - 2010-08-16 14:40

Great!!!

  • Fleckie - 2010-08-16 14:41

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. We seriously don't need this bloody lil idiot playing for us. We have Dewald who is this years vice captain plus Hoffman who is reali talented. Rassie wat the hell are you doing ???? PLZ don't get this arrogant idiot

  • Brett - 2010-08-16 14:44

The one guy i hate in the sharks team now come on Rassie i never took you for a fool. PS TO ALL THE BULLS MOENIE SO SUUUUUUUUUUUR WEES NIE MANNE .DIT LYK VIR MY JULLE IS MAAR SLEGTE VERLOORDERS.........

  • Stormer - 2010-08-16 14:45

Hey I will take Kockett I think he is one of the most underrated Scrummies in SA at the moment. I welcome him to Province

  • skywalker - 2010-08-16 14:46

Not good for WP...they should stick with Duvenhage and Hoffmann...send January to Bulls....Kockott is a brain-farter..!

  • Jack Turner - 2010-08-16 14:47

Pity the "Bulls" don't snap up the oppurtunity and ask Rory to join them. He is a great number 9. ..There must be a problem with him and Plumtree. He is by far the second best scrumhalf in the country next to Fourie Du Preez.

  • skywalker - 2010-08-16 14:48

Slumming for jaarpies....looks like NZRU is worried about filling their stadiums.

  • Go Kockott - 2010-08-16 14:51

I rate Kockett but if he is hoping to secure a spot at the Stormers for Super 15 rugby he is very mistaken. He will be 3rd line down there!! What also comes to mind is that most of the Shark's stars go there to end their maybe he wants to hang up his boots down in the Cape!

  • Attitude - 2010-08-16 14:53

Kockott's bad attitude seems to have boiled into his relationship with the Sharks coaching staff and fellow team mates, even after he scored his try one could see his teammates aren't fond of his attitude anymore. After his 'almost' try he was mouthing off at Strauss for some reason.....anycase, McLeod gives a crisper service when spreading the ball.

  • Snakes - 2010-08-16 15:00

I wonder, who in the WP team was born there??

  • juan - 2010-08-16 15:01

No surprise. wp cant develop players. they can only buy players that other unions have allready developed into decent rugby players. 9 out of this weekends 15 came from other provinces. that leaves 6 that actually made their name in wp colours. rassie erasmus is the worlds best "buyer".

  • greg - 2010-08-16 15:04

He's joining the Manchester City of rugby. They buy anything with a name.

  • WP MAN - 2010-08-16 15:15

  • CHEETAH - 2010-08-16 15:15

well good news for the sharks, i see next season zane kirchner is going to be playing for the sharks...i think that is also good news for the bulls

  • Adrian - 2010-08-16 15:17

Noooooo! Kockott is rubbish - Duvenage is way better - leave him at the Sharks - this would be the worst buy ever. WP spend the money on a decent flyhalf instead!

  • @Juan - 2010-08-16 15:19

We are just buying back what we are losing. Every year wp are one of the strongest unions at school level, u19 and u21. But we lose most of these players to other unions before they can play senior rugby. We also have the strongest varsity sides in the country (Maties & Ikeys). We also lose these players to other unions. So its only fair that we buy players to strengthen the side again. So please.. think before you speak. Because in next few months and for the coming years we will again be the best senior rugby union. PS. I assume your a bulls supporter. Shame!

  • dubloki - 2010-08-16 15:21

The Western Cape has the best talent by a long long way and we don't need to buy them. We've got three of the top 5 schools in the country here.

  • WP Fan - 2010-08-16 15:22

  • Bigbratz - 2010-08-16 15:28

It was only a matter of time. I'm sorry to see him go, but maybe WP will utilize him better than the Shrks.

  • Realistic Lion - 2010-08-16 15:28

You Sharks supporters can't complain - the Sharks were the first "S A Invitational" team, whereby very few players actually originated and/or stayed in KZN. Thinks back of the time of the "Last outpost of the British Empire"when Natal never got anywhere. Go count how many of your current players came from everywhere else (at least four comes from Gauteng!) So Cowboys shouldn't cry!

  • Vic J - 2010-08-16 15:32

The only reason he has not been starting is because Plum cannot handle some one who stands up for himself. Everytime Cocket came on for Pienaar (during S14), the game changed for the better. There was spark in the game. Mcleod is ok but not better than Cockit. Sharks will miss him if he goes.

  • Blue Jake - 2010-08-16 15:39

Will fit in nicely with that attitude.

  • ProVince - 2010-08-16 15:39

Being a Stormers supporter and knowing the Kockott family personally I would be heavily disappointed if he moves to WP. His problems with the Sharks is due to his attitude! To all who lambast WP for buying players please go educate yourselfs and look at how many home grown players the Bulls and Sharks have, the only province that have a reasonable argument in this regards is the Freestate, they grow great plays but due to budget constraints move on to either the Sharks, Bulls, or WP... its modern era sports suggests getting use to it and stop wasting your time/breath complaining abt it.
