Kings to play Super Rugby

2012-08-16 13:00

Cape Town - The South African Rugby Union (SARU) on Thursday confirmed South Africa’s participants in Vodacom Super Rugby at a General Meeting of the member provinces.

The top four teams in the South African Conference in 2012 (Stormers, Bulls, Sharks and Cheetahs) will join the Southern Kings in the 2013 tournament.

The teams were confirmed after the General Meeting accepted a proposal first tabled by the Executive Council in January. The proposal was that: “The franchise occupying the lowest log position of the five franchises at the end of 2012 would be relegated.”

The Lions, who finished bottom of the South African Conference, will have the chance to regain their status in 12 months’ time. The Executive Council had previously determined that the bottom team in 2013 would play in a two-legged promotion and relegation series against the relegated franchise. The promotion/relegation series will also be in place in 2014 and 2015 - at which point the broadcast contract expires.

“All rugby provinces have been consistently in support of the need for an Eastern Cape team in the Vodacom Super Rugby competition,” said Oregan Hoskins, president of SARU. “That decision was first taken in 2005 but their inclusion has twice been postponed.

“We made a commitment to the Kings to include them in 2013 and rugby has delivered on that commitment. The franchise represents more clubs than any other region - apart from the Stormers - and contains numerous leading rugby schools. It has been starved of top-class rugby competition for a decade and a half and now it has the chance to show what it can do.”

Hoskins said that SANZAR’s decision to grant the 15th franchise to Melbourne in 2011 – rather than the Southern Kings – had created a dilemma for SARU. He said that the organisation and players had wanted a “rugby solution” to accommodate six franchises in five places and this had been delivered, as challenging as it was for the relegated team.

“The provinces asked for a rugby solution and we believe that this was the fairest and most transparent method to respond to what is undoubtedly a less than ideal situation,” he said. “We also canvassed Vodacom Super Rugby players before the start of the season, through the Players’ Association, and this was their preferred mechanism. Jurie Roux, the CEO of SARU, said that the decision to apply a promotion and relegation system from 2013 was standard practice in sport.

“We operate promotion and relegation in all our Absa Currie Cup competitions, with the bottom-placed team being relegated unless it wins a play off,” said Roux. “Our strategic goal is to have six strong franchises covering the whole of South Africa and this decision keeps all of them in play on an annual basis.”

HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you think SARU made the right decision to include the Southern Kings in next year’s Super Rugby tournament at the expense of the Lions? Will the Kings be the laughing stock of SA rugby? Send your thoughts to Sport24.

Every time I see a photo of Cheeky Watson, I want to puke on an EP jersey. Expecting slaughter in our conference next year.

      DieKriek - 2012-08-16 13:07

NZ and Aus are goona moan, now SA teams have 4 byes each. Two 4point byes and two 5point byes

      deon.fouche.3 - 2012-08-16 13:10

Playing the kings will be a sure 5 pointer! With a 4th team!

      jason.children - 2012-08-16 13:12

Even my beloved Stormers will get a 4 try Bonus point twice!!!

      chester.tobias.3 - 2012-08-16 13:15

Kriek are you for real? They only play 2 games against the kings , home and away. Your commentn not ayoba!

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-08-16 13:17

Jason, you are optimistic, AC cannot count to 4.

      DieKriek - 2012-08-16 13:18

Chester, wakey wakey china, teams have 2 byes, and 2 games against the Kings, 2+2=4

      dean.mark.williams - 2012-08-16 13:21

the Kings will at least earn 8 points for their byes... but that is all

      jason.children - 2012-08-16 13:24

If a relegation match is the fair and transparent way of doing it, then why dont they play one to see who goes in Next year? Why do the Kings get in without proving themselves! POLITICS!!!!!!

      deon.fouche.3 - 2012-08-16 13:29

Watchman, word groot asseblief! Die Kings sal nie eers die CC kan wen nie, wat nog te sê naby kom aan n wen in die S15? Enige S15 span sal hulle maklik wen met n 4de span!

      Active - 2012-08-16 13:36

This is BS, they should have made it a play off between the 2 teams, 3 games, winner takes it.

      jono.qmann - 2012-08-16 13:47

about time the lions are out! next the bulls lol

      mike.dufham.7 - 2012-08-16 13:59

Come on folks. What a load of political cr@p. Cheeky and his useless son at it again, Makes one want to puke. Let's stand together and boycott every game that the Kings play

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-08-16 14:00

This is SARU waving a huge middle finger in the face of the SA rugby loving public. Fire the lot of them.

      TravieGrif - 2012-08-16 14:09

Between SANZAR and SARU this is just an almighty great stuff-up. SA brings in the most revenue to SANZAR by some country mile, yet Melbourne gets the additional franchise. I don't argue that there is value in bringing in the Kings, but to do it at the expense of the Lions will have serious repercussions for the region and for the country. Surely being the supplier of the cash there should be a bigger say, or are we the "roll-over-and-die" kinds? Do a promotion/relegation thing, because surely you have to earn your way in? Or maybe that is old-school thinking and these days you just have to know the right people?

      crazyjourno - 2012-08-16 14:22

@ Watchmen - I agree. Leave EP alone. Get your facts straight and then comment in a decent manner. The EC has delivered excellent rugby players...

      rueon.scott - 2012-08-16 14:29

This will benefit the other SA tems- 10 points guaranteed on the log!-three Sa teams in the semis again. If the name Watson was not involved, perhaps this may not be so bad- the super 15 was getting a bit boring seeing same players/teams every year. Many fringe players may be interested, sign a 1 year contract and be assured of a start and exposure on TV- become far more marketable. From a Lions point of view- very sad- the Currie Cup champions out to a team that cannot even with the vodacom cup! They should use 2013 to sort out their coach and financial problems then beat the crap out of the Kings .

      peterdup - 2012-08-16 15:11

      richard.vantonder - 2012-08-16 15:35

I fully agree with you, Tonight Hoskins will be braaing with Cheeky showing a finger to rugby supporters.

      Owentjie - 2012-08-16 15:50

The lions have been in the bottom 3 since 2002. Not sure how anyone can be upset about the kings having a go. Maybe the lions will be a little more serious about how to run their union. Also if they suck, the lions get a chance to have their spot back, and maybe figure out how they can transfer there currie cup success to super rugby. 10 years is a long time to be at the bottom.

      jacobus.vandermerwe.9 - 2012-08-16 15:53

  • cape.maori - 2012-08-16 13:04

What a joke!! It will dilute the competition unless they sign some players!

      lance.elliott.3914 - 2012-08-16 13:22

Wait until they sign half the Lions team...the "Lion Kings from E.Cape" will run on the field in 2013..just watch..

      MarkSchrade1980 - 2012-08-16 13:23

I reckon they'll lure alot of Lions players

      mardeo.bezuidenhout - 2012-08-16 13:34

we will sign some players, dont stress!!

      JaredVN - 2012-08-16 13:42

I thought the idea was to promote rugby in the Eastern Cape, and to give EC talent a chance. So how does importing players from other provinces or overseas do this?

      mike.burrows.37 - 2012-08-16 14:24

Will they players they sign be prepared to play in the B section of the Currie Cup once the Super 15 is complete. Or will they force then into the A section as well. Will players be prepared to sign a 1 year contract ?

      smellarat.smith - 2012-08-17 11:28

I am quite happy for the EP kings to ignite rugby among the African population of the Eastern Cape. I will cheer them on, despite my disdain for the pontificating vleiskop Watsons. There are people in RSA that did much more for the struggle than just having played Rugby in the Townships and having made money selling alcoholic beverages to the locals. For me that is nothing compared to e.g. Helen Zille's brave act of defiance in the case of Steve Biko.. But let me throw the gauntlet at all the Bok haters who claim there is some form of gate keeping keeping Africans from entering the Bok team - put your money where your mouth is and let us see Mr. Watson immediately make the EP Kings a fully demographically transformed team. And then see how they do against the other S15 teams. No excuses. Otherwise shut up, because you have no leg to stand on.

      TravieGrif - 2012-08-16 14:33

Rodney, I don't think that people in SA want to see the Kings fail. I certainly don't as that does nothing for rugby in the region or the country. I have no opinion as the whether Solomons is a chop or not, having never met him. The concerns are rather around the SARU/SANZAR process, which is utterly flawed, where the Kings have not earned the right to this stage, as well as the impact that this is going to have on the Lions franchise. My final comment is more a question...if the Kings have all these players that they are waiting to sign, why are they having such a battle for supremacy in the VODACOM CUP???????

      dustin.dewet - 2012-08-16 14:37

I'm not sure if the Kings deserve a place in S15 but then again what did the Lions achieve the last couple of seasons. SARU really f..cked this up like only they can. With only a couple of months to acquire a decent squad and then try to gel them into a team I can't see them being very competitive. They might surprise one or two of the weaker teams but with the added pressure of the promotion/relegation game to play they won't care whether they lose all their games as long as they win those two games. I can't see the lions coming back from this. They will lose all their top players within the next 6 to 8 weeks. It is a shame we don't have rugby administrators with backbone in this country. We are the biggest stakeholder in SANZAR but our administrators keep on letting the NZ and AUS guys do as they please. We should have had 6 teams competing but instead we as SA rugby supporters are getting bent over and done dry!!

      ruan.vanniekerk.754 - 2012-08-16 14:45

      wayne.redman.7 - 2012-08-16 14:00

Guys--it all depends on whos contracts expire now--if they still have contracts until 2014 they not going anywhere and as for ex EP players moving back its all about whats offered in the salary--Plus would you move if there is a chance in 12 months time you might be going back down--dont think so--its just a different type of job at the end of the day-EP simply do not have the finances(packages ie cars/accom) to offer to any top --so enjoy the dream now its about to turn into a nightmare--at least the Stormers supporters will get a bit of a break from the banter next year--

      david.w.bakker - 2012-08-16 14:01

All players for 2013 for the lions have been confirmed except. Jantjies, Stauss and Taute. Who have a clause in their contracts that if the Lions do not play Super Rugby somewhere else. F*cking Watson and his son make me sick. What a laugh it will be if the Kings play the Lions in a warmup game for Super rugby and get a hiding.

  • tom.robbins - 2012-08-16 13:28

So in other words 100% chance that the Kings will be relegated at the end of 2013 and the Lions will be back in 2014. What stupidity. I'm going to support anyone playing AGAINST the Kings I don't even care if they're Aussies!

      Andrew2711 - 2012-08-16 14:20

I think that would be a certainty based on current team make-up. But what if the Kings sign up all the Lions players who no longer have a S15 franchise to play for. I don't see the players just sitting out next years season so potentially the relegation match could be between a majority of Lions A-team players plus a few EP stalwarts vs the Lions Vodacom cup team.

      terry.burne - 2012-08-16 15:17

@ Andrew - and just exactly how, by signing all of the players from the team that came last in the competition is going to help the Kings from ending up anything but last in the competition? Just because they pull on a different jumper is not going to change the results!

      Andrew2711 - 2012-08-16 16:31

Terry, I wasn't disputing that and that's not what Tom's statement was referring to. I was saying it might not be a foregone conclusion that the Lions will reclaim their S15 spot in 2014 if they've lost all their players to other unions. I think it is a foregone conclusion that the Kings will finish bottom of the log, with their only points coming from their byes.

  • charlesglass1895 - 2012-08-16 13:29

Why is everyone so against the inclusion of the Kings? Surely we deserve a chance as well? Lions have proven season after season that they are not up to par with the other teams so kick them out and give someone else a chance at least. As for all the stormers supporters poking fun at the Kings inclusion, how do you laugh and choke at the same time?

      Vanman1979 - 2012-08-16 13:36

We are not against inclusion of the Kings. But is this a fair way to do it? Why must the Lions play a relegation/promotion game to regain entry if you guys just get in? A relegation/promotion match would have been better. But that would probably mean that you won't get in.

      deon.fouche.3 - 2012-08-16 13:38

      willy.vanniekerk.9 - 2012-08-16 13:40

The Kings lost 88-0 against a lions b team. they play 2nd div rugby, your argument is?

      charlesglass1895 - 2012-08-16 13:44

Fair enough, I agree that it was not the correct way to be included but for how many years have we been excluded from SA rugby? All of our players get bought by other clubs because we don't have the funding to keep them and I am sorry to say it but the way the Lions have been playing it's not impossible for a disciplined high school 1st team like Grey Bloem to beat them so Kings can't be THAT far off...? Besides, even if we crash and burn, the Lions will have another chance the following year... so can't we give the Kings one season?

      wayne.redman.7 - 2012-08-16 14:06

Well then in that case the chance should have gone to Griquas--they been the next best team to the Lions for years

      BobbyL37 - 2012-08-16 14:13

Ur name says everything, u must have had too much to drink, the Kings can't even promote themselves into a curriecup, they can't even beat the Pumas. What a laugh. They will have to make sure they put 10 players of colour in or else the state will fire cheeky!!!

To throw something else into the mix; how fair is it to only give the Kings 1 guaranteed season of Super Rugby. They will struggle to attract meaningful sponsorship deals to recruit players if they can only offer 1 year of good TV coverage. Both sides are getting screwed here - Lions getting booted out just 5 months before the start of the new season, and the Kings only having 5 months to prepare for the toughest domestic league in the world, and not having the resources or being allowed the time to develop to give it a proper go. All in all, another example of piss-poor management

      charlesglass1895 - 2012-08-16 14:44

@BobbyL37 I don't mind the majority of the country disagreeing with me, they are allowed to think what they want, as am I, but only people who stay in SA and didn't go running off to Dubai are allowed to voice their opinions over here.

      alexkzn - 2012-08-16 16:22

Charlie my boy...get rid of the watson cronies and perhaps South Africa may listen. As per the usual watson tirades they force their own agenda and politics onto the South African rugby loving public. The Kings have never qualified in the way all other teams have had to, so what makes them so special.

      charlesglass1895 - 2012-08-16 16:33

@Alexkzn I agree with you... I guess I am just excited that my province finally gets a shot. I do understand and respect everyone's disagreements though.

  • mschalkwyk - 2012-08-16 13:29

I predict an exodus of Lions players to go play for the Kings

      BobbyL37 - 2012-08-16 14:18

The problem is exodus of players exodus of sponsors. Thank u Saru and the State for killing rugby in Transvaal. No union can survive without sponsors.

      johan.oosthuizen.549 - 2012-08-16 15:27

I you're wrong. The lions can not disgrace their union like that.hope

  • Vanman1979 - 2012-08-16 13:31

I thought SARU promised that it would not be at the expense of one of the current unions. And why must the Lions play a promotion/relegation match to regain their place, when the Kings don't need to play one to get in? This really stinks. I hope the Lions takes this further and do'nt just drop it.

      BobbyL37 - 2012-08-16 14:21

There was no performance clause in the Super Rugby contracts that was signed with the unions. This is bulls*t. We should boycot all Super rugby games next year where Kings are involved in. If nobody watch their games we can prove a point.

  • pettitt.j - 2012-08-16 13:35

Absolute disgrace. Based on rugby merits was it? I hope the Lions win the Currie Cup and then SARU will look more idiotic than they are right now. A decsion that was 100% political. Sad day for South African rugby

      BobbyL37 - 2012-08-16 14:23

We are again the laughing stock of the whole world. Well done polititians

      mardeo.bezuidenhout - 2012-08-16 15:14

Why Pettit? lions won the CC last year, ment nothing 2 them in super rugby 2012????

  • ryan.dadswell1 - 2012-08-16 13:35

shocking news as the kings don't play in the Currie cup and now they skipping a level and playing in the super 15. They are going to be the whipping boys for next year

      BobbyL37 - 2012-08-16 14:24

Surely that must be agaist the rules of the game to skip a level!! any comment??

  • kevin.wright.58555 - 2012-08-16 13:38

So why no relegation games in 2012 SARU?? I smell a rat!!

  • beau.schoeman - 2012-08-16 13:39

No, the EP-Kings will join the S.A. Conference and not the other way round. Now, will the players of the Eastern Cape (development) have the opportunity to represent the Kings as Cheeky Watson wanted? Or will the Kings be represented by hired mercenaries from other provinces? Surely a slap in the face of the local players. I still believe EP Kings should have competed in the Currie Cup before qualifying to play in S15. S.A. Rugby must get their house in order or we are heading for disaster.

      luthorj - 2012-08-16 13:48

The only way the Kings will be able to put up a fight, is if they buy back all the Eastern Cape born and bred players, currently playing for the bigger, established unions. Put a proper academy in place, and start giving the mentioned EC youth a chance to grow into decent players, whilst ensuring that they (the Kings) will be able to RETAIN these youth players once they mature, and not let the other unions poach them. MONEY MONEY MONEY. And I hope, whether you support the KINGS or not, that the people from Port Elizabeth will go to the stadium, attend the matches (even if you go to support the opposition), and thereby ensure that money can flow into the coffers. The Lions had their chance, they became the whipping boys of the S15 and it was sad to see Ellis Park running at about 30% capacity during home games. The gap year (if the make it back in 2014) should be enough time for the Lions to have a wake up call, get their house in order and create a hunger to be competitive again. Winning the Currie Cup last year achieved nothing for them, other that allowing their players to believe they are bigger than the coach. I'm a Bulls supporter from PE, but I will be attending the Kings matches, purely grateful for the fact we will have regular, at least for a year, quality opposition from a major tournament playing locally.

  • jacques.pretorius.967 - 2012-08-16 13:39

this is a lot of rubbish, they can't even qualify to play in the Currie cup, now they will be playing super rugby. politics is killing sport in this country. why not play each other and the best team plays

      rodney.louis.7 - 2012-08-16 14:07

Lions deserve to be relegated !!! They were warned that the last placed team will be relegated and still didnt improve !! U twats sure got The brain capacity of Worms !!!

      BobbyL37 - 2012-08-16 14:36

Ahhhh yaa Rodney u have the brain of a rocket scientists hey???

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-16 16:24

Rodney this is not about the Kings playing S15. The nonsense that is being being spewed here has got nothing to do the Kings. The issue is that most of the people posting here view Cheeky Watson as the villain. How could SARU take a decision like this supporting a ANC lackey. Notwithstanding that Watson& co have injected life back into a union/area that has produced many great players. Frankly, some blinded bigots I say. And as some has already said , the Lions with all the money and coaches have failed to make an impression at S15 level.

  • leonard.w.gray - 2012-08-16 13:42

    cheers lions

  • john.maree.90 - 2012-08-16 13:44

The Lions will win them 50-0 and now they replace the Lions... What a Joke. It is supposed to be a Black team but the only Black players are on the bench?

      mardeo.bezuidenhout - 2012-08-16 15:16

no the lions wont win 50 - 0. ur clueless.

      deon.fouche.3 - 2012-08-16 15:22

Johan, Lions will win more like 80-0

  • jacques.pieterse.9028 - 2012-08-16 13:44

Cheeky and his son. the jokers of Super Rugby

  • charles.gaertz - 2012-08-16 13:44

Wtf? I smell a rat! A political rat! Why not be fair and have a play-off between the Lions and Cheeky Puke's side?

  • dwayne.oliver.50 - 2012-08-16 13:45

If they deserved to be there by all means I would support that but I seriously don't think it's fair to the top 6 teams in the country (Bulls, WP, Sharks, Lions, Griquas and the Free State). Most importantly it's def. not fair the supporter that support the super 15. EP can’t even get into the curry cup, now they in the Super 15!! It’s a JOKE. At least I'll have more time during the weekends as Super 15 is completely scrapped off my list.!!!

  • louis.nolte.3 - 2012-08-16 13:46

Yay! Bonus points available for all the top teams! At least the lions beat one of the finalists this year very convincingly.

  • Hansie.Crook - 2012-08-16 13:47

Kings will not do worst than the Lions have done in the past 3 seasons... Let us give them enough chance to prove themselves just like the Lions were given ample chances to do so..... Whether you like it or not the Kings will be playing in the S15 next year. Live with it!!!!

      wayne.redman.7 - 2012-08-16 14:12

You dumbwit--how is it poss to do worse if the lions came bottom--now with comments like that confirms why EP should not be there--youre all thick

      Hansie.Crook - 2012-08-16 14:17

Thicker are those who are rude.. says a lot about you.....God bless you Wayne.redman.7

      deon.fouche.3 - 2012-08-16 14:28

Hansie, ek dink die kings het hulle self in volgende jaar se S15 ge-Crook

      BobbyL37 - 2012-08-16 14:29

At least the Lions won 2 games one against the Sharks!!! Put the Kings agaist the current Sharks Curriecup team and they will still get a whipping. If they replace the black players with white hired hands they confused the issue here. Hansie ur surname says it all, thats what Saru did to SA Rugby public.

      wayne.redman.7 - 2012-08-16 14:43

No - Rude is allowing the EP Kings to play and you to be allowed to make silly comments like you just did--Tell me how it is physically poss to do worse than coming last??? that is what you said---only thing God must bless is you with a bit more brains

  • champ.sepa - 2012-08-16 13:47

Double standards!! Why must the Lions play a promotion/relegation matches to regain their place, when the Kings don't need to play even one to get in? Oh I forgot .. politics and a kots-connection.

  • richard.russmann - 2012-08-16 13:51

Why not do promotion relegation NOW this time also? Not fair, bs. But anyway. Do not have to hope they get smashed, they are B section will be mind boggling. The reds 96 point and the Blues 100 pointer records up for grabs next year!! At least superbru betting will be easier.

  • hans.himmler.7 - 2012-08-16 13:54

  • dominic.alexander.50 - 2012-08-16 13:54
