Kings bank on SARU leeway

2012-12-18 15:39

Cape Town - The Southern Kings are hoping the South African Rugby Union (SARU) changes its rule regarding the number of foreign players allowed in Super Rugby in 2013 after admitting they signed a fourth overseas player.

The Kings on Monday secured the services of Toulouse hooker Virgil Lacombe as their fourth overseas player, despite a SARU ruling that they are allowed just two imports.

A SARU spokesperson on Tuesday confirmed to the Rugby365 website that there is "no change to the status quo" of only two foreign players allowed in local Super Rugby squads.

However, despite this the Kings still went ahead and signed Lacombe in the hope that SARU might have a change of heart.

"The president (Kings boss Cheeky Watson) is in discussion with SARU," said Danie Gouws, a member of the Kings' executive board.

"We understand the status quo remains, but hopefully it changes in the next week or two - then (if the ruling changes) we can use those players.

"We are aware of the problem and we realise nothing has changed - we are only allowed two players," Gouws added.

The 28-year-old Lacombe joins two Argentineans - scrumhalf Nicolas Vergallo and loose forward Tomas Leonardi - along with New Zealander, Auckland fullback Hadleigh Parkes, in Port Elizabeth.

The Kings replaced the Lions as South Africa's fifth representative for next year's Super competition and will open their 2013 Super Rugby campaign against the Force at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, February 23. Kick-off is at 19:10.

    Cheeky sod!

Bow down before the lord of rugby, the most esteemed, the Big Idiot himself. Rules mean nothing to Watson. I personally cannot wait to see them thrashed...

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-12-18 21:25

      Add to that: Traitor.

      BulletjieBulBul - 2012-12-19 03:30

He is a disgrace to Rugby!!! Who does this guy think he is? He worms himself in everywhere and gets away with everything. You will see that SARU will change it now because they are trying so hard to please politicians... and Cheeky. Cheeky will most probably come with some ANC connection or some High Court order to get his way. They are spending all this money and making fools of themselves only to last for one season. In 2014 the Lions will be back better than ever and they will murder the Kings out of all rugby. GO LIONS... and everyone else who plays against these IDIOTS!

  • jacques.duplessis.3785 - 2012-12-18 15:49

Stick with the rules guys!??what happenend to promoting black rugby there cheecky??stick to what u promised and the rules while u at it!

      onlinebaas - 2012-12-18 16:41

Good point Jacques. He should stick to his guns and not just buy talent.

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-18 19:46

I count 17 players of colour in Kings squad and a total of 25/26 players who hail from the Kings area and are thus not imports from overseas or other SA franchises. How does that compare to other SA teams?

      thomas.cannon.712 - 2012-12-18 20:21

Wait until the final squad is announced and then count, and then count how many are in the run on 22!!!

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-19 22:28

Difficult to predict that, but regardless of how many is in the match day 22, these guys are gaining a wealth of knowledge and expertise by being part of the Kings SR set up. This happens in all sporting codes. Guys might travel with the team and be part of the team setup for a while before they get a playing chance. This happens as the Proteas and the Boks too.

  • henryhoratio.kitchener - 2012-12-18 15:52

O goodness chaps, this seems a bit of a cheecky move, pardon the pun, if your SARU bend to the pressure of the Kings, who is truly the ruling body of rugga in South Africa?

  • aggie.agenbag - 2012-12-18 15:53

Havn´t they got enough players in the Eastern Cape ? I may be wrong , but that was what he was on about for about 4 years now , to give more black players the chance of playing Super rugby . Why do you want to play overseas players if you have so many of your own ? What was all that development bull$ÇÎ¥T all about Cheeky ?

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-18 18:48

      BulletjieBulBul - 2012-12-19 03:36

Yes Matt Good on you and your useless Kings. Do the math. I just hope that your 17 players of color can make the step up from Vodacom level to S15. The Kings cannot even accomplish anything in the lowest league in SA where development should take place. S15 is not for development you plank. The Queens will get destroyed every game. Wake up!!!

      kevin.vandyk.18 - 2012-12-19 06:03

Matt, don't waste your time with common sense. The people here go on about about development and foreign players ... funny while their franchises have had free reign for years despite pathetic results, a FOREIGN country Zimbabwe has DEVELOPED more BLACK Springboks than all their franchises put together. These are the same people calling for quotas who previously complained about them. It's double standards, nothing else and a bunch of hypocrites.

  • robert.p.gemmell - 2012-12-18 15:56

Sorry but SARU must stick to the rules you want to play with the big boys you have to play by the rules cause if you don't you open the door for the lions to take you down. you also open the door for other teams to ask for some rule bending. Sorry Cheeky 2 players and that's it. If you don't like those rules stick to playing in the currie cup and vodacom cup

      amber.rancic - 2012-12-18 16:02

Er, they can't evenn qualify for Currie Cup...

      BulletjieBulBul - 2012-12-19 03:38

They cannot even accomplish anything in Vodacom Cup man!

  • ben.nel2 - 2012-12-18 15:58

      BulletjieBulBul - 2012-12-19 03:39

  • nads.delange - 2012-12-18 15:59

I thought the whole idea is to promote rugby in the EC??? Ridiculous!

  • amber.rancic - 2012-12-18 16:02

I could've sworn that the Kings ran for inclusion based on how "strong" their team was, and on promoting local talent in their province - so why exactly do you want to increase the number of foreign players you can field? Once again, Cheeky, your arrogance and sheer dissembling is showing.

      BulletjieBulBul - 2012-12-19 03:40

Matt... Don't you have anything else to say you idiot. This is the third time that you copy and paste the same drivel. Talk sense or STFU!!!

      christopher.caine.71 - 2012-12-19 05:23

As much as i don't like the watsons. Matt does have a good point. There are more players of colour in the kings team than the other 4 put together... but they need more experience hence 4 foreign players. It's ok they'll lose horribly then be replaced by the lions, who will then lose horribly, except to the sharks... they beat the sharks just to piss me off

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-19 08:39

      ettienne.debeer.77 - 2012-12-19 17:12

@matt. if i may ask why are you lying to us by saying "SARU so lank gewag het om Kings te confirm". I believe the Kings where the only confirmed team from South Africa before the first S15 game was even played in 2012. I am not sure why the Kings require more time if they in fact knew that they were confirmed participants in 2013. You patronising tone in your responses not withstanding I do believe that one of the main reasons why the Kings did get included in the S15 was to promote local talent. In fact that was one of the main selling points for their inclusion. Now i don’t have anything against including experience in the form of other players and i don’t care what colour they are either, but don’t come and comment here about reverse quota's and other bull whilst your team is trying to sway SARU to include more members from other countries. Is it impossible to acquire experience from players within South Africa thus avoiding the whole issue where it seems as if the Kings require preferential treatment ?

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-19 22:16

  • werner.luitingh - 2012-12-18 16:11

I thought they wanted to develop local players... Thank you for removing all doubt concerning your intelligence and integrity. The reasonable man would not conduct in this manner Mnr Watson.

I count 17 players of colour in Kings squad and a total of 25/26 players who hail from the Kings area and are thus not imports from overseas or other SA franchises. How does that compare to other SA teams?

  • matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-18 16:14

Why did SARU wait until 16 Aug to confirm Kings for 2013?! That is what really sucks here. All those moaning about Kings developing black rugby... Please have a look at the Kings squad and compare the number of black players in that squad to those of the other franchises... And this will be the Kings 1st season- I count 17 players of colour in Kings squad and a total of 25/26 players who are from the Kings area originally and are thus not imports from overseas or other SA franchises. How does that compare to other SA teams? How many Sharks or Bulls players are locally bred in their franchise areas?

      werner.coetzer.311 - 2012-12-18 18:29

Who cares? Developments is STILL not meant to be handled like BEE. Do it at grass roots levels and keep the teams in that can do the country proud, not one thrown together by the ANC

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-18 18:43

Who cares? Obviously you do, why else comment? Grass roots... Dude, look at the ages of guys like Siyanda Grey and Sergeal Peterson. And also Gates, Du Preez x 2, and some others. All local youngsters.

      werner.coetzer.311 - 2012-12-19 00:39

Yes, but I still maintain that a makeshift promotion to S15 is NOT the right way to do it. I've commented before that what we should do is implement is SA is development happening at club and varsity level and make use of a Drafting system similar to that used in the NFL to spread the young talent to ALL franchises in the country, not just the political toy the Kings have become. Force the youngsters that to come through the ranks to pro level and once drafted they have to remain with that union for 2 years. End result is talent is spread across the board which in turn will make ALL unions stronger, which will make local competition stronger which will make Super format competition stronger and therefor make the Bok squad stronger. But promoting a union to Super level based on a racial issue and then they want to make use off International talent above what is allowed is what really pisses me off about these " Watson's. Please don't name local names and then justify this misuse of regulations attempted by them

      werner.coetzer.311 - 2012-12-19 08:58

@ Kevin - read what I wrote in the longer comment FFS

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-19 10:15

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-19 22:07

Bjorn Basson was op skool in Dale College. Dit val onder Kings area. Kirchner kom van Wes Kaap ja. George. So hulle geniet reeds SR voordele.

  • warren.carne.9 - 2012-12-18 16:49

That's utter bulls£it,they should play by the rules, the manner in which the Kings/Spears or whatever they call themselves have been allowed into S15 is shocking, infact I will cheer every point, even the Aussie ones scored against these jokers.

  • spillies - 2012-12-18 17:12

So this will be my 1st year where I will be rooting for overseas teams. Every team playing against Kings will have my FULL support. Cheeky, the way you went about like a sly ANC politician (your brothers), made ME decide this way.

  • JacoGriesel - 2012-12-18 17:22

      pettitt.j - 2012-12-20 08:33

Really prinsloo? That surprises me as when I think back to thoe play-offs I only remember 2 players of color maybe 3 in the whole match 22. So that stat does surprise me some what as where are the other 14-15 players then? Honestly just did not know there were that many players of color in the kings squad. Are you sure about that fact? And now that there are 4 foreign players how are 25 out of 26 home grown?

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-20 09:53

Pettitt... Its 25 OR 26. Not 25 out of 26. Sorry if that confused you. In the last play off match vs Cheetahs Kings had 3 players of colour in starting 15 and 2 more on the bench. That's 5 in total. Also remember Kings signed Fihlani, Dukisa and Maku for 2013. They're homegrown guys but played elsewhere in 2012. And then the young talent of Peterson too, who also hasn't played for the senior team yet. Also keep an eye on Siyanda Grey, who was injured for most of 2012.

  • ruanpretorius1980 - 2012-12-18 18:52

Matt if you gat gabba is so great why has he bought all those foreigners 4 in fact when he is allowed only 2 andSARU themselves cannot change the rules, it has to come from SANZAR. Also arescheeks has raided other unions for players and he can name 50 players of colour BUT are they all good enough to play Currie Cup never mind Super 15. How did they do this last season? In which competition VODACOM

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-19 08:17

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-12-20 14:30

Werner... And that is the same SARU who clearly stated before that the Kings' inclusion will NOT be at the expense of any of the other franchises? (Ps: we never created the Kings vs Lions scenario. That was SARU's doing)

  • gregory.tarboton - 2012-12-19 06:40

This is a really good example of why politics should stay out of sports. Now Cheeky realises he hasn't got the talent he bragged about, has taken local players on loan where he can and transfer, and still he hasn't got enough player depth and has to go overseas for more talent. Only good thing about the Spears playing Super Rugby next year is that the other SA teams are guaranteed 10 points each.
