Johannesburg - As rugby dinners go, this week’s benefit function for ailing rugby great Joost van der Westhuizen was in a league of its own.
Attended by former Rugby World Cup winners, business luminaries and supporters, the dinner raised R1 057 000 for Van der Westhuizen’s foundation, which supports sufferers of Motor Neurone Disease.
The legendary No 9 suffers from ALS, a form of MND, which is incurable.
“We never hesitated when we got the call,” said George Gregan, the world’s most capped rugby international, who lent his support to his great rival at the function hosted by the SA Rugby Legends Association.
The night provided tears, fun and laughter with the best moments provided by Van der Westhuizen himself who bravely spoke before 1 200 guests, among them sports minister Fikile Mbalula.
A highlights show, which includes interviews with Gregan, Justin Marshall and Gary Teichmann, will be broadcast on SuperSport this weekend.
Saturday:
SS1 and M-Net, 14:20; CSN and SS1, 21:00
Sunday:
