Jake confirms Lions signing

2012-09-26 10:02

Canberra - Australia's Brumbies said on Wednesday they have signed towering South African lock Etienne Oosthuizen as their foreign development player for the next two years.

Oosthuizen, 19, was capped three times for the Golden Lions in 2012 and turned out at schoolboy level for the Springboks. Though young, he is powerful on the park, packing a hefty 120kg into his 1.98m frame.

He will take the Brumbies' foreign development spot, vacated by Fijian wing Henry Speight who will be considered an Australian player from 2013.

Under current rules the Brumbies are allowed one developing foreign player, who must never have represented their home country at first-grade level and are prepared to one day play for Australia.

Oosthuizen said he was sad to leave Johannesburg but would relish the chance to train under Jake White and Laurie Fisher.

"As a South African, I realised the chance to move to Australia and join one of the world's best rugby programs was a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Oosthuizen.

"I've followed the Brumbies' development this year and they were one of my favourite teams to watch. I know I can add to their style and look forward to the coaching staff improving my own game at the same time."

Despite dominating the Australian conference for much of the Super Rugby season, the Brumbies fell short at the final hurdle, losing to the lower-ranked Auckland Blues in the last round and missing out on the playoffs.

White has already lured injured Wallabies captain David Pocock to the Brumbies for 2013, along with former Australia wing Clyde Rathbone who is eyeing a comeback after chronic injuries saw him retire in 2009.

great news!! i dont think there is any 19 year old that will reject the chance to be coached by JW!! he will become great under jake and when he returns at 21 he might even be selected for the boks!!

"and are prepared to one day play for Australia."

Arche, he isn't coming back! The decision by SARU to give the Kings a Super Rugby spot will be the catalyst for many of the Lions players to look overseas. The big problem for SA rugby is that only the better players will get offered contracts, thereby withdrawing them from the pool available to the Boks. Josh has gone, Etienne is going, this won't be the last on the list

Rugby is a career and moving to Aus to play under JW is a wise decision Having the EC back in the big league will only but strengthen our player base

      liesure.larry - 2012-09-26 18:14

Luke saying that... What will happen to the Lions then? didn't the EP Kings signed some foreign player the other day? Lions never signed any abroad players as far as i know... Personally i think the way the EP Kings got into the S15 just plain wrong and stupid... They don't even play CC... please note i don't support either of the teams just my opinion...

      Owentjie - 2012-09-26 22:26

Liesure larry, Lions players, Spencer, Kamano, clever, Coaches luarie mains, mitchell, spencer...?Have you watched much rugby recently

      liesure.larry - 2012-09-27 04:27

Owentjie was ref to players... Carlos did play for them a couple of seasons ago... but like i said i don't support any of them hence me not knowing exactly... point is Kings doesn't belong in the S15 if we go on Merit...

Good luck Ettiene, at least in Aus you will be picked for their national squad based on ability, not based on which union you are playing for!!

      luke.sportify - 2012-09-26 13:12

Sorry Nico you make no sense... If you still think the Boks are blue then why are there only 2 in the starting 15...

  • jonathan.groenewald.3 - 2012-09-26 11:57

I find it disturbing that Jake White is allowed to come into the country, have his pick of any players he wants, then fly back out with our talent. We should get our coaches to do the same to the nz and aus teams

  • scholtz.werner - 2012-09-26 11:59

stop moaning about unions, just stop moaning !! Its not MS fault the boks lost, its all you supporters putting the pressure on him for the last 5 months. You cant throw Goosen for the lions hell get eaten up , he is good but lets manage him right i have respect for HM at least he looks after his players.
