Auckland - All Blacks coach Graham Henry has spoken in further praise of his captain, revealing that Richie McCaw’s foot was quite a sight on a recent fishing trip.
The Rugby World Cup-winning coach and captain have both taken to some well earned rest and relaxation in recent days.
According to the allblacks.com website, while one of McCaw’s most enjoyable pastimes is flying, Henry is a fisherman, saying that nothing allows him to tune off from the world like casting a lure off the side of his boat.
Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, Henry said that the two had been fishing in the Hauraki Gulf last week when he looked down at his World Cup-winning skipper’s foot.
“I looked at his foot and said, 'Hell, Rich, that bloody foot looks swollen mate, really swollen',” Henry said.
Henry said that McCaw simply replied “Yeah, Ted, it is.”
The All Blacks coach said after the World Cup final that McCaw was one of the guiding lights for the team.
"Richie is an inspiration to the whole team and management," said Henry.
"He can hardly walk and how he played I just don't know."
"He will have some time out now. That he got through it was down to his heart and determination. He is the best leader this country has ever had.
“Richie has gained strength through experience. He has led the All Blacks in more than 60 Tests and he got his reward when he got his hands on the cup."
The full extent of McCaw’s injury and treatment will be revealed in the coming days.
