Cape Town - Springbok centre Frans Steyn could return to play his rugby in South Africa after his contract with French club Racing Metro expires at the end of June next year.

Steyn's agent, Gerrie Swart, confirmed to the Volksblad newspaper that Steyn is considering a return to South Africa.

"We're currently looking at options and there are possible shifts back to South Africa," said Swart, who is currently in France discussing future plans with the Bok centre.

Swart did not reveal what unions in South Africa are after Steyn's services.

Steyn, who has been out of action since injuring his shoulder in South Africa's World Cup group-stage win over Samoa, could return to the playing field as early as January.

"They (Racing Metro) are busy rehabilitating him. He has already regained full use of his shoulder and doesn't feel any pain. So things are at this stage developing better that what we initially expected," said Swart.

      So 'n bek kort Jem!!

      Walter - 2011-12-07 21:51

Please not WP / Stormers. He belongs with the Cheetahs or at least then the Sharks. I do consider him the best 12 but WP should get their house in order first - otherwise he will just have to play for the Bulls and Lions to have played for all the unions. Please WP - if you want to recruit players, do it when they are still young. Remember the huge mistake you made trying to replace Bob Skinstad with Big Joe.

  • Mario - 2011-12-06 23:36

WP...they need you BAD!!!!! they have the money after selling Fourie for 22m. What do you wanna bet?

      johan.blertsie.cilliers - 2011-12-07 08:28

Wonder just how much WP got from this deal

      george.traut - 2011-12-07 08:32

WP didn't get anything. It was a free transfer

      Sam - 2011-12-07 08:35

Province got nothing because Fourie was out of contract.

      morganpiek - 2011-12-07 09:38

Jaqcue Fourie is actually joining the Kobe Steelers, initially he played for the Panasonic Wild Knights, but they didn't over him the contract. Its true however that WP made nothing out of it, seeing that his contract ran out at the end of the Currie Cup.

gr8 player, gr8 news was such a pity he was ruled out of the RWC, him & Juan Smit would've made a huge difference.

  • hendrik.pienaar - 2011-12-07 02:50

Frans made his money.. He will return to a team that let's him play at 12, and 12 only. - Won't go back to Sharks. They treated him like s.h.i.t. - Won't go Bulls. Not his game and they've got plenty of centres already. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Unlikely to go to the Lions, unless they offer him big money. Could be a good move though. - Unlikely to go to WP. Not the ideal fit, and they already have plenty of centres. Also JdV contract runs until 2014. - Cheetahs maybe? Grey College old boy, and they would treat him like gold. He wants to play 12? He'll play 12.

      hendrik.pienaar - 2011-12-07 03:05

10 Johan Goosen 12 Francois Steyn 13 Robert Ebersohn Not many sides would be able to compete with that.

      donald.dods - 2011-12-07 07:02

I doubt that the Cheetah's have the money to buy a super player like Steyn.... He would be great next to whitehead,so dont write a bulls contract off just yet , would like to see him @ the Cheetah's though could be what they need ... But my first guess would be Lions, they've got the couch, the money, then Bulls (but unlikely), then Cheetah's (doesn't his parents stay in bloem, or at least in the Free State ? ) - Anyway would be great to see him play on home ground again ...

      hendrik.pienaar - 2011-12-07 07:15

@donald. He's made his money. I think he'll be wanting to go for a 'fair' paycheck now, rather then looking for the team that will pay him the most. It will be more about what situation he will be going into, and the fact that he's got school friends and so forth in the Cheetahs team, his parents living there and I presume his wife-to-be also being from there should mean him choosing Bloem. Tim Whitehead is a good player in an Aaron Mauger sort of way, but no real attacking threat. He needs someone outside him that can make use of the space... not another inside centre who rather shifts the ball.

      johan.blertsie.cilliers - 2011-12-07 08:30

I'm not a cheetah, but damn that would be awesome if he could go there, just a pity very few unions will have the money to pay for him

      Raeez - 2011-12-07 08:50

I must say it whould be good for SA Rugby if he goes to the Cheethas. (Cant believe i just said that)#Lionsfan

      morganpiek - 2011-12-07 09:12

Hendrik, you make a few valid points there. Frans Steyn cannot be played at outside centre, and it would be stupid to play him there as well. The problem with SA Rugby is that we do not have quality inside centres at the moment. We have way too many outside centres, the the coaches try convert too many into inside centres. Frans has proven in two World Cup that he is a World class inside centre. Personally, I would love to see him playing at Western Province along side Juan de Jongh. I reckon they would make a dream pairing. WPRFU need to start winning back the minds and hearts of their loyal supporters, signing Frans could be the first step in the right direction. I would even love to see him play for the Cheetahs, they derserve a player of his quality, he was bred there at South Africa's greatest rugby institution after all. However, whoever is lucky to get his signature can go to bed knowing that they've made an incredible investment. I wish Frans all the best, he is a star that needs to be looked after.

      Aldo - 2011-12-07 09:16

The Sharks treated him like what? I don't recall that? He still holds affection for the don't rule a return out completely...

      Dale - 2011-12-07 09:30

Lol, I love how you manipulated your views to say he's essentially going to the cheetahs...pfff

      Paul - 2011-12-07 09:56

@ hendrik.pienaar ... good one bru ... My Choice would be for the Lions , because I'm a Lions Fan ... but would rather see play for the Cheetahs than any other team !!! And for the BOKS 10 Johan Goosen 12 Francois Steyn 13 Robert Ebersohn 14 Killian 11 van der Heerver/Taute 15 Lambie No team would be able to beat our Boks !!!

  • Skhona Skratchy-l Luswazi - 2011-12-07 06:41

      wenwe - 2011-12-07 08:04

well actually it started in the Freestate ... then he was in New Zealand at the Murry mexsteads rugby academy ... then the sharks ...

      Calvin - 2011-12-07 09:22

Sharks sent him to IRANZ, as the did they with Craig Burden.

  • BlouMasjien - 2011-12-07 08:21

Dit sal baie goeie nuus wees as Frans Steyn weer in SA gaan speel. Dit gaan afhang van 2 faktore, geld en die wil om in SA te speel. As geld die grootste faktor is gaan ons hom moeilik terug tekry. Ons moet maar duim vas hou dat die wil om in SA te speel swaarder weeg.

  • John - 2011-12-07 08:53

He'll come to WP if they made a lucrative offer. Why wouldn't he? There are many players who want to wear the hoops at some stage in their career. The playing style suits him, he has worked with Coetzee under White. WP have the budget available now Fourie has bolted. Oh and like so many before him, if his babe wants to live in CT then WP it will be.

      Jed - 2011-12-07 09:56

As much I would love him with Province, It would not be good for S.A rugby. In South Africa Provincial we have way to many quality player's vying for the same position or certain Players swapping positions. Having J.De Villiers, Jaque Fourie and J.d.J at Province has made sure J.d.J who has allot of potential has not had a fair chance to display it yet. It's a good thing that Sadie Moved. I'm afraid we going to lose allot of young quality flanks from the Bulls, Province and the Sharks due to the amount of quality players coming through the ranks and South Africa's Provincial tendencies to stick with what they know.

      BlouMasjien - 2011-12-07 10:32

@ vallemj , dankie dat jy my elke dag laat lag. Soos Pieter de villiers dink jy nie voor jy praat nie.

@Terence, vallemj live in a world of his own, it's the result of his papsak and tik addiction getting to him

      Jed - 2011-12-07 13:41

BlouMasjien, bet you my world of tik and papasak is allot better than your world Klippies and cola and sleeping with Family members?

    Some good news finally!!!

  • ShauneJordaan - 2011-12-07 09:29

Steyn wants to play no 12- and he showed at world cup why. He carries the ball, and his distribution is excellent, defense excellent. And he gives you massive kicking options. Steyn is a super star and we need to make sure we USE him, and look after him. I reckon the sharks will be his home. But, the lions have money. Can the lions compete at super rugby? I think its to early for that.

  • The-third - 2011-12-07 10:45

WP or Lions most likely candidate. Chances are he'd want "the lifestyle" aspect of things and go for Cape Town.

  • wmdupreez - 2011-12-08 08:37

He is still young - C'Mon province - sign this guy!!!!

  • donald.dods - 2011-12-08 09:11

Sorry in my Earlier post I said Whitehead, but ment Sadie, who is playing for the bulls next we just need a 12 ...

  • wesley.g.mercer - 2012-04-20 12:06
