Fourie wants No 2 jersey

2012-11-06 07:41

Cape Town - Deon Fourie, who led Western Province to Currie Cup glory as a loose forward, says he wants to return to playing hooker for the Stormers in next year's Super Rugby competition.

Fourie was often used at No 8 and flank due to a loose forward injury crisis in the Cape this year but is keen to return to his normal position for the Southern Hemisphere competition.

"I think for myself and the team it will be better if I move back to hooker. That's where I want to be. Guys like Schalk Burger, Siya Kolisi and Rynhardt Elstadt are coming back (from injury). They're all guys with heaps of talent and have proven themselves in their positions," he told Die Burger's website.

"But you never know what can happen, maybe there are more injuries. I think we are blessed at hooker with Scarra (Ntubeni) who proved himself and Tiaan Liebenberg who is a Springbok."

Fourie was recently also named as Currie Cup Player of the Year.

He has never played for the Springboks but says he will always keep on striving for the highest honour.

"If you don't have hope, you kill half of your dream," he said.

Deon, no matter which position you play in, I know you will become the best in that position in SA. 1 through to 15.

@Braam,16 for who,the Boks:):):) Deons versatility to play in those positions is a asset to any team.

No mate. Good player, but not the best hooker in SA by some distance. With Bismark set to return in the new year, he will be behind him, Chilliboy, Strauss, Burden, Liebenberg. I don't know if he can take the Stormers jersey away from Liebenberg, but good luck to him. He has dreams and goals, and he is a hard worker, so we will watch this space...

What do you figure Chris, Deon for SARU player of the year? bwa ha ha

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-11-06 22:25

PinkRaven. Are you sure it is player 24? What about Player 25? Can I interest you in Player 30? Do you know the difference? Dowwe nurse, no SARU player of the year has already been awarded. IRB Player of the year is up for grabs still. But like I said from the start Duane will win that though.

I just hope he sticks to it... So many players say they want to play only one position and then still get messed around by the coach. Hopefully he won't have to leave our shores in order to play the position he wants. @ Jimmy NZ, I agree with you, there is no way he's the best we have; think Bissie, Adriaan, Chilli and even Tiaan - Fourie is number 5 in the pecking order and nowhere near Springbok quality yet. But he is nevertheless seriously talented player and a massive asset to WP/Stormers, and he has the right to decide where he wants to play... They better not stuff him around too much.

      TravieGrif - 2012-11-06 09:29

Isak, he played really well against the Sharks in the final, but that was one game, and he played at 6. #2 is a totally different kettle of fish. I think he should stick to 6, because he a terrier in the loose.

The most overrated player in SA. He is great at Currie Cup level yes....but that was in a tournament where the best players were either injured or in the Springbok setup. Hardly a true reflection of his talent. Just because WP won the Kerrie Koppie doesn't suddenly make him a Springbok. But I guess that winning a trophy blurs the objectivity and reality of the fans. Let him SECURE a spot on the RUN ON team in Super Rugby before sending another lamb to the slaughter
