Hamilton - Sonny Bill Williams's boxing career took off as he scored a first round knockout over American Clarence Tillman in Hamilton on Wednesday night.

According to the website, the win left Williams undefeated from five fights and earned him the New Zealand Professional Boxing Association championship belt.

It also dismissed any doubts about the apparent lack of punching power of the All Black.

After the two boxers sounded each other out early, Williams connected with a good left hook and then finished Tillman off with a flurry of blows that had his opponent with his head hanging out of the ring.

Referee Lance Revill stepped in to stop the fight with one second left in the first round.

There was plenty of feeling going into the clash after their much publicised altercation at Tuesday's weigh-in. And that carried on when they got into the ring together, having to be separated as they banged shoulders and exchanged words.

Tillman left the ring immediately after the fight, not bothering to stay around to see Williams presented with his belt.

There was also ugly scenes when Williams's original opponent Richard Tutaki entered the ring to taunt Williams.

Tutaki was removed with All Black and Chiefs team-mate Liam Messam acting as Williams's minder.

The 26-year-old Williams was giving away 6 cm in height, a massive 21kg in weight and tons of experience to the 34-year-old American who had 21 professional fights going into this bout, including 11 wins with six by knockout.

It was a big night in Hamilton with the crowd at the Claudelands Events Centre including All Blacks Tana Umaga, Wayne Smith, Matthew Cooper, Frank Bunce and the bulk of Williams's Chiefs team-mates.

Williams now turns his attention to Super Rugby with the Chiefs, returning to training on Monday and likely to feature in their final warm-up match.

    Dozey,kids must be ecstatic!!!!

      Bulldozer - 2012-02-08 12:16

They'll be happy if he beats a decent opponent for a change.

      Thomas - 2012-02-08 20:54

It looks like he was fighting the Telly Tubby after he was smoking weed!!!! When is SBW going to get a crack at a real opponent, the nobodies in America are better than what he's been fighting!!!!!

  • Hoo - 2012-02-08 12:02

Verstaan ou dik tillman het meer gekry vir di lose as sbw viri wen..??

  • Francois - 2012-02-08 12:06

another BOXING article in the rugby section, thanx SBW! Hope you can actually get a REAL opponent soon.

      hvanderlinde - 2012-02-08 13:20

Now that I would watch with interest

  • Quintin - 2012-02-08 12:07

I wanna see SBW vs Bakkies Botha!

      Jimmy - 2012-02-08 12:17

Lol, what's SBW done to you ??? :)

      Bob - 2012-02-08 12:22

Quinton, why? don't you like Bakkies, SBW might not be Tyson but I can assure you Bakkies would be lucky to see the 1st minute out never mind the 1st round, even a boxer with as little experience as SBW is light years ahead of one with zero experience.

      hvanderlinde - 2012-02-08 13:22

Bob, Bakkies looks like he's been a brawler all his life. Even with SBWs coaching, I reckon he'll get moerd.

      Bob - 2012-02-08 13:46

I hear you but I still reckon a boxer with some experience will take out a brawler 9 x out 10, that SWB doesn't look a softy in any case, I lived in OZ for a couple of years, trust me them Aussies are hard mothers, there's nothing they like more than a good brawl.

      Quintin - 2012-02-08 13:57

Bob, SBW is a Kiwi, not an Aussie. Besides, wouldn't you enjoy those two fight it out for the new Chuck Norris Title?

      Bob - 2012-02-08 15:37

Quintin, oops, of course you are correct, they are so close the Kiwis and Aussies I kinda brand them the same, Aussies call them our neighbours across the ditch.

      Bob - 2012-02-08 15:38

Yes I reckon it would be quite a short but spectacular coming together, I would certainly pay for the entertainment.

  • Amanda-Leigh - 2012-02-08 12:11

    Was Bryce Lawrence the ref?

      Jimmy - 2012-02-08 12:16

      zzzzzzzzzz, so old already !!!

      Fatu - 2012-02-08 12:32

My God!! Get over it woman!

      Ruben - 2012-02-08 13:44

It never gets old!!!! and never will ! even after he admitted of his wrong doing!

      Amanda-Leigh - 2012-02-08 17:25

I'll get over it, in 4 years' time

  • cwboshoff - 2012-02-08 12:21

Lol, take that you dumb american!!!!

  • Johan - 2012-02-08 12:41

Look at those shoes of SBW! Has he gone pro-skateboarding now as well?

  • jonker.fourie - 2012-02-08 12:42

Tillman had 21 professional fights with 11 wins which means he has lost 10. So his win loss is about 50 / 50. Wouldn't really call him much of anything.

      sam.kaitawa - 2012-02-08 12:52

      Wrong, Won 11 (6 KO), lost 8 (2 KO), drawn 2

      sam.kaitawa - 2012-02-08 12:54

  • Doc - 2012-02-08 12:44

Damn, now I cant diss him for at least a month. Where did I put my hat?

  • Chris - 2012-02-08 12:49

Just watched the video... where do they find such crap opponents for SBW?

  • ronnie.cloete1 - 2012-02-08 12:52

I just watched the video of the fight and it is so obvious that neither of these guys have any skill in boxing. SBW won because he was faster, but his technique as a boxer was shocking. Here's a suggestion, let's have Brad Pitt fight a big slow black guy with huge hype around the fight. I'm sure he'll soon be considered a 'great boxer'!

  • Peter Klaassen - 2012-02-08 13:17

why is the South African media reporting on SBW's crap boxing career? Its a waste of space and bandwitdh....

      Bob - 2012-02-08 13:48

Peter, so why are you wasting yr time reading it.

  • The-third - 2012-02-08 13:21

DO ME, A *****ING, FAVOUR. He boxed against a seriously out of shape opponent who also looked like he had very little to offer in terms of technique and power, let alone anything else. Your average West-rand tow-trucker would probably have also kicked his backside within one round. It's a bit like asking a 12 year old to bowl at AB de Villiers and then celebrating if he hits 6 x 6's in one over. Duh.

  • jason.bulpin - 2012-02-08 13:29

is this a joke? the guy hes fighting is a fatty who looks like hes never trained a day in his life?!?!? LOLOLOL seriously..this is nothing, now do that in the olympics... DOUBTFUL

  • Donny Doncaster - 2012-02-08 13:35

What a joke, Stephen Hawking would have put up a bigger fight..

  • tony.delucchi - 2012-02-08 13:48

...what a palooka, the fellow looked positively drunk, I think even Gio Aplon would have floored him!

  • ivan.coetzee2 - 2012-02-08 13:57

Good 1 SBW, that should shut a couple of mouths!

      Dawie - 2012-02-08 22:55

@jay187 Schalk Burger is waaaayy to slow and stupid for boxing, poor idiot.

  • jay187 - 2012-02-08 16:21

Why so many haters for SBW ? Hes an incredible athlete, he dominated rugby league in the toughest competition on the planet for the Bulldogs (NRL), hes been awesome in union for both Crusaders and the ABs. Now hes in his 3rd professional sport since the age of 24 ? If you all dont care so much, then why read and respond ?? Hes had 5 wins from 5 bouts and its his SECOND priority sport !! Of course he hasnt played anyone major... yet... He has rugby for the Chiefs and ABs to focus on for the next few years. If Schalk Burger was boxing you would all be on the bandwagon though right? Come on SA fans, your better than this, I know cos I lived there for 5 years. Dont be so biased and Aussie Larry about this. And as for the Bryce Lawrence comments.. yawn.. get over it.. Jeez even us Kiwis didnt go on like this about what happened in 07 v France.

      Rodney - 2012-02-08 17:08

jay don tbe a paw paw u idiot ..give sbw a real boxer then we talk..otherwise shut your flytrap

      Dawie - 2012-02-08 22:56

@jay187 Schalk Burger is waaaayy to slow and stupid for boxing, poor idiot.

      Jon-Jon Zulch - 2012-02-08 23:13

Rodney You don't know much about boxing do you...

      jay187 - 2012-02-09 05:09

@Rodney, did you read what I said ? Of course hes not going to play any major boxer. As I said its his SECOND prioroty sport right now. He has rugby to focus on. Read what I said. F*** knuckle.

  • Dawie - 2012-02-08 22:51

Asof dit nou iets is. Ek sou daai vetg@t in 10 sekondes uitgelsaan het. Ou Bakkies sal darem lekker SBW se h@l vir hom op 'n skinkbord teruggee

  • Dustin - 2012-02-09 11:52

Looking at the "fight" its blatantly clear that neither SBW or Tillman deserve to be in a ring, Tillman is grossly out of shape bar butterbean's standards he definitely has more technique than SBW but both of them are found seriously wanting on the technique side, SBW never once protected his chin, his hands were down the entire fight if Tillman was in better shape he could've snapped SBW's head off with a few well placed jabs, but Tillman went for the haymaker every time? IDIOT!? I rate you give SBW a decent Amatuer boxer to fight and see how that unfolds? Boxing is a science, of which SBW has very little to no understanding? What a joke.
