Cape Town - Defending Varsity Cup champions, Tuks, have entrusted the captaincy on former Maties stalwart, Reniel Hugo.
Hugo, 23, announced last year that he would join the University of Pretoria, where he enrolled for an honours degree in accounting.
Tuks coach Pote Human recently made the lock forward his captain for the 2014 Varsity Cup. Hugo played against Tuks in both the 2012 and 2013 Varsity Cup finals, and both games ended in defeat for the Stellenbosch side.
In an interview with the Varsity Cup website, Hugo said he is eager to play in a winning final.
"My single biggest desire is to be on the winning side in a Varsity Cup final, but that wasn't meant to be in 2012 and 2013.
"I am therefore hungry and Tuks can count on me to come out the blocks firing when our season starts on February 3 with a home game against UJ.
"I feel humbled that coach Pote entrusted me with the captaincy. Like Maties, Tuks also have a rich rugby culture and tradition."
Human said Hugo was the best option for captain.
"The fact that he still played for Maties against Tuks in the 2013 final is water under the bridge. He is a Tukkie now and in my view the best option for the captaincy. I have huge belief in his abilities as leader and player," said Human.
Meanwhile, another former Matie, prop Brummer Badenhorst, has also been added to the Tuks ranks.
The front ranker was part of Griquas' Currie Cup squad last year, but decided to head for Pretoria this year.
