Johannesburg - The Lions were dealt with a setback on Monday when midfielder Dylan des Fountain was sent for a scan to his knee, after injuring it in Friday night’s loss against the Stormers.
While no indication of the severity of the injury has been given yet, it seems that the former Bulls and Stormers utility back could miss the start of the season.
Des Fountain will now face an anxious wait to see how serious the injury is, and how long it will keep him out of contention.
Coach John Mitchell told SuperSport.com that he was disappointed by the injury as Des Fountain had shown some good pre-season form on the training field and at Newlands.
“Dylan has a knee injury and while it is pre-season, we will have to assess him. It is a pity as he had some good touches in areas that were going to put him in contention for a starting spot.”
Mitchell revealed there were no other injuries from the loss against the Stormers, but did say that the franchise were perhaps looking for alternatives and may cancel their planned game against the Kings in George.
“It seems we may play a weak side down there,” Mitchell added, “If that is the case, then we may consider not playing the game. There are ways around that and we will then stick to our preparation and simply increase the intensity of our training programme.”
The Lions have no other games planned before they begin their Super Rugby campaign.
