De Bruin to coach Lions

Johannesburg - The Golden Lions Rugby Union appointed Swys de Bruin as the assistant coach to the senior team on Friday.

"I am excited to join a proud Union like the Lions," De Bruin said in a statement.

"I have the utmost respect for Johan (Ackermann, head coach) and I believe we will work well together to get the Lions back to where they belong."

De Bruin started his professional rugby career as coaching co-ordinator at the Sharks in 1996 and was Griquas head coach from 1999 to 2003.

In 1997 he steered the Sharks Under-21s to the national title as head coach.

During his tenure with the coastal side he was selected to coach the South African U-21 team in 2001.

He was involved in the Sharks Academy in 2004 as head coach and assisted the Sharks senior squad as the Super Rugby skills coach during this time.

De Bruin coached the Sharks XV, Sharks U-21 and U-19 sides between 2005 and 2011.

This year De Bruin worked as the High Performance coach with the Durban-based side.
