WP captain fed up with yellow cards

Cape Town - Western Province captain Chris van Zyl has urged his players to improve their discipline as they prepare to host the Golden Lions in a Currie Cup clash at Newlands on Friday.

The Cape side received two yellow cards in both of their previous matches against Griquas and the Blue Bulls.

Against Griquas it cost them dearly as they lost 44-34 in Kimberley, despite leading 34-24 at one stage.

They led 42-13 against the Bulls at Newlands, before yellow cards halted their momentum in the second half of a 45-34 victory.

“The first thing I did on Monday was to bring up the issue of discipline,” Van Zyl was quoted as saying by Netwerk24.

“It doesn’t matter that we may feel we were harshly dealt with at times. We must make sure that we don’t get on the wrong side of the referee.”

Meanwhile, WP coach John Dobson made two changes to the starting line-up for Friday evening’s clash against the Lions.

The only change to the backline sees Dillyn Leyds come back into the fold on the wing in place of the injured Bjorn Basson, while Cobus Wiese replaces Kobus van Dyk at flank.

Dobson said that his team will have to be at their best after a short week of preparation.

“This is another real challenge for this team, but the players have embraced that and we are excited about taking another step forward in our game,” Dobson was quoted as saying on the WP Rugby website.

“We are proud of our record at Newlands and would like to continue getting positive results at home.”

Kick-off for Friday’s clash at Newlands is scheduled for 19:00.
