Willemse expected to return to WP action soon

Cape Town - Damian Willemse will make his long-awaited return to action in Western Province's Currie Cup clash with Griquas in Kimberley on Friday night.

Willemse hasn't played since the Super Rugby encounter with the Lions at the beginning of June after sustaining a knee injury in that match.

It was bad timing for the 21-year-old utility back with the World Cup on the horizon and has seen him fall down the pecking order due to the Springboks' superb performances in the Rugby Championship.

But Willemse will have a chance to make a late claim for World Cup selection after Western Province coach John Dobson confirmed that the expects the exciting back to finally return to action this weekend.

“I expect Damian Willemse to be back this weekend along with (flank) Jaco Coetzee‚ wing SP Marais and (prop) Ali Vermaak‚” Dobson said.

“Selecting them will be difficult because the guys starting have done well. SP’s big boot could be a factor in Kimberley though.”
