Durban - Following the disappointment of not making the Springbok 31-man squad for the Rugby World Cup in Japan, prop Thomas du Toit has shifted his aim to helping the Sharks defend their Currie Cup title.
The Sharks are in the semi-finals of the Currie Cup where they do battle with the Free State Cheetahs at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday at 17:00.
Du Toit and team-mate Andre Esterhuizen were released from the Boks' camp in Bloemfontein last week and that was a sign that they were not going to the World Cup.
And on Monday as much was confirmed when national coach Rassie Erasmus named his squad.
Du Toit admitted that not getting the ticket to Japan was a bitter pill to swallow, but that doesn’t mean he will stop working hard, especially for the Sharks.
“It was definitely a bit disappointing realising that I won’t be playing (in the World Cup), but anything can still happen, you have to be on standby permanently,” Du Toit said.
“You can’t think that everything is going to work out perfectly and be a fairytale.
“Obviously, I’m not keeping my fingers crossed for an injury, that’s horrible, but I’m still aware of the fact that something might happen.”
Despite not making the cut, the time spent in the national camp was definitely not a waste of time.
“With the Springboks it was good, you learn so much from those coaches. You get different when you are at a different place, the change of scenery actually makes you learn different things and coaching styles,” he said.
“Obviously, being back at Currie Cup I feel like there’s a bit more and less pressure. More in the sense of guys looking up to you and less with the number of people looking down on you.”
In the Currie Cup, the Sharks are in for a tough time in their clash with the Cheetahs who finished on top of the standings.
The men from Free State will definitely not want to lose to Sharks twice in one season after the Durbanites toppled them 27-20 at King’s Park earlier in the tournament.
