Currie Cup not far off Super Rugby - Bulls fullback

Cape Town - Blue Bulls fullback Divan Rossouw says rugby fans should not underestimate the strength of the Currie Cup.

“Super Rugby is obviously at a higher level, but the Currie Cup teams are strong and a few Springboks are in action,” Rossouw told Netwerk24.

The Currie Cup structure has copped flak in recent times, especially after the decision to play this year’s Premier Division over a single round between the seven teams.

Springbok participation is also few and far in between and crowd attendances have been low in recent times.

But Rossouw, who made his Super Rugby debut earlier this year, added: “You still have to focus for 80 minutes like in Super Rugby, otherwise opponents will expose you.”

The Bulls opened their Currie Cup campaign with a 34-12 win over the Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, before losing to the Sharks in Durban (26-10) and Golden Lions in Pretoria (38-35).

They tackle Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday (14:15 kick-off) and the 22-year-old Rossouw acknowledged it would be a tough outing.

Rossouw hails from Namibia and says he is used to the hard fields like they will experience in Kimberley.

“The smaller and harder fields do not bother me. I’m somewhat used to it because I come from Namibia.”

Rossouw also revealed that Namibia had expressed interest in him ahead of their Rugby World Cup qualifiers but he turned them down due study commitments.

He could, however, still could earn a call-up to the team for next year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan where Namibia will play alongside South Africa and New Zealand in Pool B.
