Cavaliers gain bonus point win

Grabouw - The Boland Cavaliers capped off their superb Currie Cup qualifying campaign with a bonus point 28-24 (halftime 21-17) victory over the visiting Golden Lions XV at Grabouw High School on Saturday.

Tries by centre Jacques Nel and flanker Victor Sekekete saw the Lions race out to a fourteen point lead. Hooker Chadley Wenn got the Cavaliers on the scoreboard before a penalty by flyhalf Shaun Reynolds furthered the gap to ten points.

The Cavaliers then dotted down twice to grab the lead, with winger Sergio Torrens and hardworking flanker Shaun McDonald both dotting down. The Cavaliers led 21-17 at the break and were looking to grab another major union scalp, with the Blue Bulls and Toyota Free State XV both having been conquered.

After the break Sekete grabbed his brace and the visitors had the lead at 24-21 with the majority of the second half remaining. Nearly a quarter of the match later centre Robbie Louw grabbed the bonus point try for his side and also seized the lead. Despite being reduced to fourteen men when winger Danwel Demas was yellow carded the Cavaliers still had two chances to extend their lead. Fullback Nico Scheepers missed both penalty attempts but the Cavaliers still walked away with the victory when referee Pierre Brousset blew the final whistle.
