Boland lose captain for season

Cape Town - The Boland Cavaliers will be without their captain Ryan Nell for the remainder of the 2016 Currie Cup season.

Nell sustained a fracture in the lower part of his leg this past Friday, during Boland’s 25-22 win over the Pumas at the Boland Stadium in Wellington. Nell will be out of action for at least 2 months.

Utility back Gerrit van Wyk will also miss at least 2 weeks of Currie Cup rugby due to concussion. Van Wyk, who was on the receiving end of a dangerous elbow charge during the Pumas clash (as decided by the match referee Marius van der Westhuizen), should be ready for Boland’s next home match against the Blue Bulls on 23 September.

While a number of players will be assessed in terms of their fitness-levels today, several key players should available for selection for Thursday’s (8 September 2016) away match against Griquas.

Zandre Jordaan (loose-forward, calf strain), Basil Short (prop, flu), Sergio Torrens (wing, quad strain) and Jovelian de Koker (scrum-half, groin strain) should all be in contention for Thursday’s match in Kimberley, but unfortunately the fitness of fullback Nico Scheepers is still in doubt. Scheepers is currently nursing an ankle strain and will be assessed on Monday.
