Cape Town - The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) is reportedly eager to enter a team in South Africa’s Currie Cup.

UAR president Marcelo Rodriguez told the La Nacion website that he and other members of the board had met with SA Rugby president Mark Alexander to discuss the matter.

“We are working hard to try to access the Currie Cup in 2019,” said Rodríguez.

“We are in an advanced process that has to follow a logical decision on the part of SA Rugby, but until now we have received support and goodwill (from them). On our part, we are still studying a set of issues to resolve, which have to do with logistics and the budgetary impact. We are working hard to have a financial model that allows us to participate.”

Rodriquez added that they were optimistic about the prospects of joining the Currie Cup and would have two more meetings with SA Rugby at the end of the year.

Argentina previously had a team participating in the now-defunct Vodacom Cup. The team was called the Pampas XV and played in the event between 2010 and 2013, winning the title in 2011.

The Currie Cup Premier Division currently consists of seven teams, with the tournament being played over a single round in 2018.
