WP to target Lions stars?

Cape Town - Western Province and Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has hinted that he may look at acquiring some of the Lions' players for next year's Super Rugby competition.

WP take on the Golden Lions in a Currie Cup clash in Johannesburg on Saturday and with the Lions out of the reckoning for next year's Super Rugby, some of their players could be the target of other unions.

The future of star players like Elton Jantjies, Pat Cilliers, Franco van der Merwe, Josh Strauss, JC Janse van Rensburg and Jaco Taute looks uncertain with the Southern Kings taking the Lions' place in the Southern Hemisphere competition.

And Coetzee told Die Burger they might be interested in luring a player or two from the Johannesburg-team.

"Some of the other franchise-teams will look to see if players will be available due to the Lions not playing Super Rugby

"Elton Jantjies is a player who has an exit-clause in his contract if the Lions do not play in the Super-series," he said.

The coach also singled out Jantjies as a danger man for his team on Saturday.

"Elton is an intelligent player and often starts counter-attacks form the back. He normally makes the right decision when he has to decide to run or kick the ball back."

WP on Monday also welcomed the return of Springbok squad discards Juan de Jongh and Siya Kolisi. Both were part of the Bok squad before the Rugby Championship but were not picked to make the trip over to Argentina this week.

The clash at Coca-Cola Park kicks off at 17:05 on Saturday.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
