WP to punish Sinclair?

Cape Town - Western Province could dish out their own punishment to No 8 Jebb Sinclair after he emerged unscathed from a SARU disciplinary committee hearing for throwing a punch in a Currie Cup game.

Sinclair and fellow loose forward Tyrone Holmes both appeared before the SARU committee on Tuesday after receiving red cards for punching in their team's loss to the Sharks in Durban over the weekend.

Holmes was suspended for one match, while Sinclair was allowed to play in their Currie Cup clash against Griquas on Saturday.

Judicial Officer Peter Ingwersen ruled that Sinclair was severely provoked in that he was struck five times by his opponent with an open hand before he retaliated, which led to the decision to free him from further punishment.

However, according to Die Burger, Western Province will hold their own disciplinary hearing with the two players on Wednesday, where they will decide if Sinclair will be allowed to play on Saturday.

"They were tempted into doing it, but it doesn't change the fact that the punches cost us dearly," forwards coach, Matt Proudfoot, said.

"Jebb's red card happened at a critical stage. Our driving maul was working well and we were two metres from the Sharks' goal-line.

"The issue has to be brought home to the players and we have to see if we can help them to not make the same mistakes again."

WP's clash against Griquas at Newlands kicks off at 15:00 on Saturday.
