Sharks v WP in Currie Cup final

2012-10-20 20:59

Johannesburg - Western Province scored a last-minute try to beat the Golden Lions 21-16 in their nailbiting Currie Cup semi-final at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday evening.

The Capetonians will face the Sharks at Kings Park in next week's final after the Durban-based side beat the Blue Bulls 20-3 earlier in the day.

The Lions and Province exchanged blows in the opening minutes of the match as they were equally dangerous on attack.

The hosts had an early opportunity to score the first five-pointer of the game but they could not convert the pressure into points.

It was a classic battle of attrition as neither side dominated any areas of play and it was clear the match would go down to the wire.

Province drew first blood with flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis succeeding with a penalty conversion three minutes into the match.

The visitors handed the defending champions an advantage a few minutes later when wing Gerhard van den Heever was yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-down in the sixth minute as the Lions attacked inside Province’s 22.

Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies, who had a difficult night with his place-kicking, missed a shot at goal a minute later.

While they remained evenly matched, neither outfit showed respect for the ball as they missed perfect opportunities to put points on the board.

The Lions squandered four attempts at goal while Province also missed a chance to score early in the match.

The defending champions finally got onto the board with Jantjies converting a penalty in the 16th minute to draw the scores level at 3-3.

After a few attacking exchanges Province got themselves back in the lead as Catrakilis converted his second penalty kick of the evening on the half-hour mark.

The Lions were afforded three more chances to open a gap but Jantjies' and Ruan Combrinck’s attempts at goal were off target, handing the Capetonians a 6-3 lead going into the half-time break.

After the recess the tempo moved up a notch as both teams attacked the gainline.

The Lions were the first to benefit from the change in pace with Jantjies receiving an opportunity and succeeding with a penalty conversion to level the score four minutes after the interval.

The home side took advantage of their new-found confidence as they ran in the first try of the evening with flanker Michael Rhodes crossing the chalk in the 49th minute.

Scrumhalf Michael Bondesio attacked from a loose-scrum inside his own 22 and grubbered the ball up field. Provinces’ playmaker centre Juan de Jongh, who was in place to field the ball, fumbled and conceded at the breakdown.

The Lions established quick ball with Jantjies offloading to Rhodes who received it at pace and sprinted through to score under the posts, with Jantjies converting to give his side the lead for the first time in the match.

The next 10 minutes saw the visitors launching a series of attacks, but the Lions’ defence held strong to deny the visitors a chance to close the gap.

Province finally pierced their defences, however, after continuous pressure, with replacement Joe Pietersen taking an inside gap inside the hosts’ 22 to score.

Pietersen missed the conversion, which would have levelled the scores, but he made up for his slip-up a minute later when he converted a penalty conversion to give his side a one-point advantage.

With only four minutes left in the match, Province seemed to have secured a Currie Cup final berth but Jantjies converted a penalty to snatch back the lead for the hosts.

The visitors then drove more than 15 metres from a lineout to score the winning try, with eighthman Duane Vermeulen dotting down from the back of the maul, and Pietersen converted to secure the victory.

What an excellent game! Both teams gave it all. Guys thanks for the entertainment! Jantjies was a bit of a disappointment. Sorry Lions, geluk Sakkie en jou WP. Go Sharks!!!!!!!!!

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-20 21:09

Yo-yo game. Never knew who would win. With a few different calls, could have gone either way. Lucky bounces etc, but that is rugby hey.

      GullibleX - 2012-10-20 21:12

Goes to Show....... This is how semis are played.. Not the 1 sided games in the other semi, where the Bulls were not even there.

      ReneMuller.XOXO - 2012-10-20 21:15

Priester, I'm glad Jantjies is going to play for the Stormers next year! Lions should have started with Butch, the result might have been different. @Sakkie, geluk ou mater! Onthou dis Kerk more oggend ne!

Well done Province. Although it will be very tough against the Sharks.

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-20 21:06

Bring it on! Gonna be a cracker. Hoping for a good ref though.

      jaco.schalkwyk.752 - 2012-10-21 00:27

Well done to WP boys. Now for the finals.

sean no thats sounds like you and your dad

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-21 10:31

Seriously Sean. You sound like a Bulls supporter!

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-10-22 15:44

Sean, if WP lose in the final - how would that qualify as a choke? They beat the Lions - who was above them on the log - and if they lose an away game to the side that finished top of the log, it cannot be classified as a choke. read the dictionary to see what is the definition of choking...

  • Jack - 2012-10-20 21:08

Ag not to worry lions supporters you can still win the vodacom cup in 2013.If only lions supporters spent more time at ellis park than on this site wp wouldnt of played a 'home' game at ellis park.

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-20 21:11

The stadium was empty as hell, that would never happen in a semi in Cape Town, pathetic.

      GullibleX - 2012-10-20 21:17

Thing is Jack. At knockouts, someones got to go home. At least this was a nailbiting finish which shows how strong rugby in SA is. Unlike the other match, where it was so one sided. And to think the boks are made up of mostly Bulls and a biased coach...

      macziekpk - 2012-10-20 21:25

Mostly bulls. Do you follow rugby? Haha idiot

      GullibleX - 2012-10-20 21:30

3 points in the CC semis, but had 13 players in the Bok squad when the season started. Bye Heyneker,Niknaks,Morne Steyn, and all the other wannabes

Reminds me of the old WP, running the ball nd generaly playing like the current sharks play. That rolling maul was smething, i doubt it will be as effective against the sharks next week. All in all wp pulled tht one out of the hat, not nxt wk though.

  • sbahle.wela - 2012-10-20 21:10

Lions should have learned that you don't win a match if you miss penalties, consult Springboks for more on this

  • jed.vonallemann - 2012-10-20 21:10

Dit was Leeus se tweede span en het op Kings Park duidelik geword.

So, andre, vertel my, hoe gaan jy volgende saterdag deurbring? Bietjie tuinwerk? Miskien die kar was? Of gaan jy voor die tv sit en jouself simpel suip terwyl jy duim vashou dat die wp verloor? Shame ...

      eden.vanderwiel - 2012-10-20 22:28

Andrejy is nie baie slim nie of hoe? Kyk die span wat Leeus laas naweek gehad het teen die span. En hel WP het swak gespeel maar nogsteeds gewen

But Prozac has doubled in price due to the increased demand! Bwaaahahahaha! Latest tally:14 guys jumped off the main stand at Moftus; 5 bulls' fans drowned in the Apies River; 7 wives were battered to death by angry husbands and 11 fans overdosed on Prozac. Roadrage is rampant and it is reported that Sunnyside's 'ladies of the night' cannot nearly cope with the soaring demand by disgruntelled fans. A shocking report just in, says that snipers are in place on the O.T. - Pretoria road. Apparently they are planning to wipe out the entire Blue Bulls team .

  • franz.prade.9 - 2012-10-20 21:28

Can 't understand that nobody congratulates the Lions on coming this far and according to me was a little bit unlucky to lose. Most of these fighting rugby players under trying conditions are now lost and spread around the country where they will enjoy Super Rugby and stay there. What a disgrace. Thank you Lions for providing me with exciting open and fighting rugby the last 2 years. I will miss you. What a shame

      gerhardmcsa - 2012-10-20 21:37

I think in most cases the Lions players are on short contract to the other Super15 teams. It is a bit of a joke, but they're not lost to the Lions

      jean.viljoen.395 - 2012-10-20 22:19

Can not agree with you more. Lions style of play the future for SA rugby. Let the ball do the work and create width on the park. Just like the All Blacks. Got to thank the spineless rats WP and Free State for voting against Lions and making a mockery of SA rugby in next year's Super Rugby. Only place where these so called Springboks will have their moment in the sun is the CC.

      franz.prade.9 - 2012-10-20 22:44

Gerhard, the players coming back is a long way away and according to the rugby roster for the year will have to leave their new teams at a crucial stage. This will most probably not be allowed. We will have to play relegation game without them and in any case they will be used to a dfferent game plan ie. the Bulls kicking game etc. Chances then that we may lose the game to a team who have played 14 odd top level games. Our team togetherness gone. SAD, SAD, SAD for us staunch Lions supporters. What a disgrace !!

I reckon the answer to the woes of Province's recent playoff misery is apparent: senior players who were actually a hindrance rather than the inspiration and leaders desperaely required in such situations. The kids just went for the win no negotiation. Schalk? Andries? Jeans? Is it over for them? Joe P is another worry.

  • franz.prade.9 - 2012-10-21 00:01

      willa.prinsloo - 2012-10-22 09:10

Agree. I feel for the Lions, excellent spirit, but demoted in S 15 in place of a team that was trashed by the bottom team in its division. I look forward to Saturday's game. John Plumtree shows that continuity is important. Can't understand Bulls method of two coaches for what is virtually one team. It backfired spectacularly on Saturday, and at times the Sahrks outplayed the Bulls at their own game.
