WP ponder their best No 9

2012-08-24 08:40

Cape Town - Western Province will keep rotating their scrumhalves to find the best balance between attack and defence in this year's Currie Cup.

Backline coach Robbie Fleck told Die Burger they want a more attacking dimension from their No 9s.

"We'd like to see our scrumhalf pose a threat at the breakdowns and take the game to opponents. The Stormers' attacks were too sideways at times during the Super-series," said Fleck.

Dewaldt Duvenage was the main culprit in the Super Rugby competition, with many pundits believing he lacks an extra dimension in his game.

The WP brains trust gave Duvenage a break last week, with Louis Schreuder and Nic Groom doing duty against Griquas in Kimberley. But Duvenage is back in the mix this week, replacing Groom on the bench while Schreuder keeps his place in the starting team.

However, in accordance with the new rotating policy, Duvenage is expected to start against the Blue Bulls at Newlands next week, with Groom then coming in on the bench.

Fleck said he was pleased with Schreuder and Groom's efforts in the 25-20 win in Kimberley last week, and admitted they're working on improving Duvenage's all-round game.

"In the last few rounds of Super Rugby we paid a lot of attention to Dewies's (Duvenage) attacking game. He's not a running scrumhalf by nature, but he's kick-and-pass game is very good. The other two (Schreuder and Groom) have to get at the same level in those departments," said Fleck

Well it's def. not Duvenage. So it's obviously between Schreuder and Groom.

Bullsh!!t! I have been following Duvenhage's career from before he started at the Stormers, he's a brilliant ball player, he has unbelievable skill and a lot of vision, he has been turned into a passing, kicking scrumhalf by the Stormers coaching squad, whom employed this conservative, win at all costs gameplan and forced players to stick to it. The Stormers team has been over-coached (if you can use that term). For me Fleck should be the first one to go, he has one of the most talented backlines in South Africa to his disposal and yet they can't score tries. Bring back Carel du Plessis and Gert Smal, the last time Province played any sort of decent rugby was under those two.

Yeah because topping the Log and winning the SA Conference is shocking! How dare they do that LOL

      legndkilla - 2012-08-24 11:03

i dfntly agree with u!!!!whats the use of finding great raw talent and then turn them into stereotype players(de jongh, duwenhage, carr and a few others..)

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-24 12:03

Sportmal, while hear what you say, i have never seen him use his skill set. His speed from the base of the scrum is adequate at best and hardly ever keeps the loosies guessing. Sure, i seem to agree about over coaching and structure, which I firmly believe comes from AC, who in turn got that from JW. Ihavent seen Carr loosing his skill set, he is sublime for a loosie in offloading, probably the best of the WP loosies and perhapd De Jongh has become one dimensional.

, but he's kick-and-pass game is very good. \r\nThats sums up the whole problem!our brilliant backline coach thinks Duvenhage's got a good passing game...he is by far the slowest scrummie around and his loopie passes are constantly putting the backline under pressure and are the main reason they are useless on attack.these idiotic statements from our coach are probably a good indication of where the problems in Cape rugby are.

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-24 12:04

Spot on... coaches take too long to effect change cause they are scared to change

We need 2 sign Sarel Pretories from cheetahs nd Johan Goosen 2 hav an attacking bckline nd jean de villiers shud stop stepping inside nd not create space 4 our outside bcks thats y poor habana mus go look 4 work our poor wings shame

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-24 16:04

Shaheem Sarel cant defend to save his life, but good on attack

  • legndkilla - 2012-08-24 11:14

duvenage was a brilliant precise scrummie when he started, the last 2 seasons or so i dunno what happened(injuries or caoching staff).imho i think we need a change in coachng staff cos we have the talent and the players to outshine any team wether it be super or currie cup rugby, we losing all our good players (deon fourie jaques fourie fenton wells kitshoff). we becoming the laughing stock of s.a cos we cnt finish when it matters most, yes winning is winning wether by 1 or a hundred, bt we as supporters, some even players and ex players come to support and see running entertaining rugby nt excuses and shud have's and we'll do better next time round.... these are trying times for us as wp and stormers supporters bt we cn only take so much before we get fed up.....

I've said this on this platform before and I am going to say it again. Fleckie needs to give it up, he has had enough time in that position. Just his comments alone should make you realise that we need to find another backline coach. If AC cannot see this then he too needs to go, ultimately the responsibility lies with him as head coach. And yes we know that the team topped the log, but that just makes it worse because its the defence that keeps you constant in the league but attack wins the cup games. There is no attacking plan in our play.

      eduard.wagener - 2012-08-24 13:42

Thing is, 2007 RWC the boks got in Jones for the backline to fire, the problem sits with AC...

  • jacques.theunissen.982 - 2012-08-24 12:21

It has been a mystery to me that AC cannot find and train a decent 9, having been a 9 himself? Only have to look at Sharks and all their great loosies to figure out what Plum was playing in his days. Janno would have been a good buy 4 years ago and Sarel a good one 2 years ago. Academy is not producing.
