WP hooker calls it a day

2014-10-28 07:20

Cape Town - Springbok and Western Province hooker Tiaan Liebenberg has called time on his rugby career.

The 32-year-old has struggled with back injuries in the last while and has decided to call it a day. He will move back to Bloemfontein to join a family business.

Liebenberg, who played five Tests for the Springboks in 2012, joined WP from Griquas in 2006.

He says he has no regrets about his career and thanked the people involved who helped him achieve his milestones.

"I owe praise to so many people for the impact they made on my career: Allister Coetzee, Matt Proudfoot, Robbie Fleck, Steph du Toit, Greg Hechter, Rassie Erasmus, André Markgraaff, Johan van Wyk, Jacques Nienaber, Gert Smal and Rob Wagner,” Liebenberg told Die Burger.

He also praised the mentorship of his agent, Hilton Houghton, and lauded Smal and Wagner for having the patience to keep backing him despite many injury problems.

I will always rate players who give it 100% every game they play. The Deon Fouries, Corne Kriges and Duan Vermeulens of the world with their "never say die" attitudes. I count Tiaan as one of them. He always gave 200% .
