WP brought down to earth

2010-08-27 22:07

Cape Town - The visiting Free State Cheetahs produced a telling 17-point second-half scoring spree in the space of six minutes to send Western Province crashing to a 29-24 defeat in the Currie Cup match played at Newlands on Friday night.

Two converted tries and penalty, all in a hectic six-minute passage of play, was all the Cheetahs needed to finally contain the Province challenge, which earlier in the match looked like a match-winning one.

The Cheetahs flyhalf Louis Strydom was the hero for his side with a personal contribution of 19 points, via five penalties and two conversions.

Province took the game by the scruff of the neck straight from the kick-off and after only three minutes' play they managed a turn-over and a line-out steal on their way to the Cheetahs' 22-metre area, where Gio Aplon managed to worm his way down the Railway Stand touchline and score at the corner.

However, Aplon was adjudged to have stepped into touch in his try-scoring effort and the try was disallowed.

Aplon featured among the personnel and positional pre-match changes in the Province starting XV after the withdrawals of centre Tim Whitehead and prop Buhle Mxunyelwa. JJ Engelbrecht came in for Aplon on the right-wing, while the latter moved the left-wing, in place of Frikkie Welsh, who filled in for Whitehead.

On the Province bench, centre Morgan Newman was added to the reserves after Mxunyelwa's withdrawal.

Both sides traded heavily on ball-in-hand running movements and the backline looked threatening but errors, mainly by way of forward passes allowed defences to stay intact.

The contests at the breakdowns were fiercely contested but not without falling foul of referee Pro Legoete. As a result, Cheetahs flyhalf Louis Strydom was on target four times with penalty attempts while Province pivot Willem de Waal steered one through the posts for a 12-3 scoreline after 34 minutes play.

With neither side managing to eliminate the shortcomings from their games the few threatening sorties ahead of the halftime break came to nought by the time the halftime whistle sounded.

Province made a similar start to the second half but this time they were rewarded with an Adriaan Fondse try just two minutes after the restart, and with De Waal adding the conversion the visitors lead was shrunk by seven points (12-10).

In the ensuing minutes Province were poised for another advance but they were overcome by white line fever and four attempts, in quick succession, came to nought at a time when spreading the ball wide seemed the more likelier option.

As the match approached the hour mark the Cheetahs regained their composure and in the space of six minutes enjoyed an incredible 17-point scoring spree to secure a commanding 29-10 lead.

First Strydom goaled a penalty and that effort was followed by converted tries by substitute loosie Kabamba Floors and Jongi Nokwe.

Province responded with converted tries by Aplon and Duane Vermeulen but it was not enough to overcome the telling setback and in the process they suffered their first home defeat of the season (29-24).

But the crowd of 24 000 were left leaping from their seats in anticipation as Province made one frantic attempt after the other to salvage the match - to no avail.

Oi, Bull Hater, whats up bru, hearing zippo. I can at least say I'm proud to be a Shark supporter. Shows last week was no fluke, you guys are going down with the Bulls.

  • Viljoen - 2010-08-27 22:48

Francois Louw over rated, poor Duane Vermeulen way better player

  • Bliiksem - 2010-08-27 23:09

OOOHH ek kry nou so lekker ..HEHEHEHE

  • Victor Yee - 2010-08-27 23:15

Very dissapointing WP. Has the inclusion of Janetjies happened too early. He is never in position Alister, He is always hovering around the forwards and then puts pressure on to his wings to cover his position at fullback. His positional play must be questioned. What has happened to Joe Pietersen.

  • Soll_wp - 2010-08-27 23:51

Not much to say here than well done to the cheetahs. Although it hurts to admit, you guys played well. Wp asseblief, we are falling apart. We need devine intervention. Fourie, de villiers, de jongh, burger, bekker

  • Wagga - 2010-08-28 00:47

  • Blue Jake - 2010-08-28 06:48

After my team lost in what must be the upset of the decade, this result takes away a lot of the pain. Vrystaaaaaaaat!!!

  • BALSAK(alias Blue Bul Hater) - 2010-08-28 07:41

Wat 'n PATETIESE vertoning and frustrating to watch!!! Maar ons sal opstaan. I'm a PROUD WP supporter since 1978!!! WP groete!!

  • Oranje - 2010-08-28 07:46

  • Yippee - 2010-08-28 08:12

Cheetahs exposed the same issues in WP as in the Bokke......are the WP going to blame the ref?? Now need to get rid of the overrated WP players in the Bokke like Habana, Burger & January

  • blou snor - 2010-08-28 08:14

  • JSC - 2010-08-28 08:40

WP is going from hero to zero. They are not laying as a team, but as individuals who have lost the plot. Dissapointing. Is Alistair Coetzee also just a flash in the pan like snorre?

  • Vrystaat Rule! - 2010-08-28 08:48

Exellent Cheetahs!!

  • I BLAME ANC - 2010-08-28 08:48

  • FG - 2010-08-28 08:54

@Balzak. Oops!! I agree with Blue Jake: the Bulls' demise hurts like hell, but the WP result alleviates the pain somewhat. Pasop, hier kom die Vrystaat...

  • Ian - 2010-08-28 08:57

The loss can be put down to two players. Frikkie Welch and F.Louw. Frikkie should be given a rest and Louw must stop believing he is a Springbok and start playing to the Laws.

  • Bull-Terrier - 2010-08-28 09:09

Thanks Vrystaat - you took some of the hurt away of loosing to the Pumas. Come on PAPSAK (alias balsak) - say something devine!!!!! I need some more cheering up from the village clown

  • Claude - 2010-08-28 09:20

Province is the team I supporet through thick and thin but they looked jaded and were full of mistakes last night. A great disappiontment.

  • Koos Kaap - 2010-08-28 09:22

Goed gedoen Vrystaat.

  • GIDEON - 2010-08-28 09:29

  • IVAN - 2010-08-28 09:40

Without Grant, de Jongh, Jean De Villiers and Jacque Fourie in the midfield Province are as exciting as watching paint dry on a newly painted wall. That Engelbrecht dude looks like a good talent for the future, once he gets more experienced he will be a fine player.

  • FJ - 2010-08-28 09:54

Cheetahs getting ahead of themselves, the score board does reflect what really happened on that field. With all the mistakes Province made and that soft try handed to the cheetahs I am not too concerned about the cheetahs in the remaining fixtures but do feel that province will bounce back from this one.

  • FS - 2010-08-28 11:02

Vrystaat...!!!

  • BALSAK(alias Blue Bul Hater) - 2010-08-28 11:21

Freestate DESERVE this win, but remember we still short of 7 springboks!!! Up you WP!!! My hart, My siel, My lewe en my alles!!!! WP groete, MAAR hierdie keer met 'n STUKKENDE hart!!!!!!

  • Andre F @ FJ - 2010-08-28 11:55

What's up Bru? You're little WP team came tumbling from their high and mighty pedestal? Over rated Louw and Vermeulen, poor babies.... Seems like WP is running out of steam hey? The Currie Cup is only halfway.

  • Hammy - 2010-08-28 12:15

Outstanding allround display by the Cheetas, I did'ent have the balls to tip them for a win vs province. Shows if you believe and concentrate for the full game time you can beat any team on the day. Top marks to Cheetas management and notably the players. Hammy

  • Jacques - 2010-08-28 13:01

Funny how Cheetahs gets happy when they beat teams whith there Boks out. WP is playing nonsens rugby the past two weeks but both teams are not looking like champions here. The Bulls - Pumas game was must more a game that will get you up and going and I am not even a Bulls supporter. Just remember the CC gets won in Oct not in August. But ye congrats to the cheetahs and the Pumas for the wins last night. But with the WP,Bulls, Cheetahs, Lions and Griekwas still in the runnings idiots comments is funny in August

  • peebo - 2010-08-28 13:19

well done Vrystaat, you beat us fair and square. Time to regroup boys - how about giving Cronje a start. @ Blue Jake and FG - there is no pain, we don't expect to win every game and Vrystaat were the better team on the night - go and drown your sorrows elsewhere, the Bulls are on their way out.

  • Sharks Bo - 2010-08-28 13:24

  • Molefe - 2010-08-28 15:00

Great game for the Cheetas. Once again Wiepie had the rub from the referee, everytime a WiePie ran with the ball there was at least one other Wiepie in obstruction. Same with Vermuelens non try. Blaauw did not scrum legaly once in the whole game!!! Inspite of that the Cheetas did great!

  • Piet Parow - 2010-08-29 07:19

WP was shocking. Their worst game since playing the Force earlier this year. Why don't you irritating SharTs supporters get a life, you have a "whopping" 3 Springboks not playing in your current squad. IF you make the semi's you will probably choke as always. Just show some class for a change.

  • StormersSupporter - 2010-08-29 09:14

Well done cheetahs. Very well played and well deserved victory. WP very flat, until the game was almost over and your back was against the wall. Then you showed what you can do, lets do that for the full 80min please. I do not understand every1. Y is WP choking or on the decline? For losing to 2 of the best teams in the currie cup? I said before this game that it is going to be very tough, as cheaters are looking very good. I would be more worried about the bulls losing to the pumas with a lot of springboks back. But, rather go through a slump now. I can tell you now, WP and the Bulls WILL be back

  • WP4eva - 2010-08-29 20:45

Congrats to the Cheetahs; really a disappointing first half and then some from the WP team...and what brought them back into the game, though too late, was playing with real passion and determination...but let me add that Francois Louw must get his act together. You are not in the permanent Springbok what? If you are good enough and keep your nose out of trouble, you'll get there. You will not get there by being Mr Big Stuff and getting up the ref's nose, which also places your team in danger of being penalised. Sorry, take a leaf out of Duane Vermeulen's book; total commitment, body on the line and rewarded with a try. Now that's what we like!!!

  • StuartW - 2010-08-30 07:18

  • KB - 2010-08-30 14:29

EINA!! Well I said it last week - WP has started the loosing streak and the Sharks broke them last week, setting them up for more defeats for the rest of the Currie cup. Well done Cheetahs good to see you back in the hunt. The Sharks want the revenge in this years semis, so stick with us and hopefully we can play you in the Semis....and we will not make the same mistake again. This time you will be Shark bait.

  • DaveB - 2010-08-30 14:58

HAK HAK HAK ... DIE WP IS KAK. Hahahahahahahha ...... Hahahahahahhahahahaha

  • Piet Parow - 2010-09-01 09:45

@KB, ja whatever grootbek. Next week we have Jean de Villiers, Gio Aplon and Juan de Jongh back and a couple of weeks after that we have Schalk, Jaque Fourie and Habana back in the mix - who are the Sharks getting back? oops.. LOL.. BTW you and your fellow Sardines better hope and pray Lambie does not pick up a serious injury..

  • Piet Parow - 2010-09-01 09:50

Never though I'd say this but I am actually starting to despise the Sharks even more than the Bulls.
