Vermeulen out for the year

2011-09-19 13:06

Cape Town - Western Province No 8 Duane Vermeulen has confirmed he won't be available for selection for the remainder of the 2011 season.

Vermeulen, who suffered a knee injury during the Stormers' Super Rugby campaign in June, had been expected to be fit for Currie Cup action in Week 8, but on Monday ruled himself out of contention on his Twitter page, writing: Hey guys I won't be playing this year so will only be back on the field for the super rugby season. So am a bit disappointed but...

Before adding: That's part of contact sport. I will def be cheering on my team-mates, so go #province

WP are currently in second spot in the Currie Cup standings after their 28-20 defeat to the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

WP welcome the fourth-placed Free State Cheetahs to Newlands on Saturday. Kick-off is at 17:05.

Nou ja, dan is dit so. Die positiewe aspek vir die WP is dat hul U21 spelers waardevolle blootstelling kry

  • jk - 2011-09-19 13:59

ons het dit mos geweet...ou nuus...

  • Nitronic - 2011-09-19 14:02

Such an overrated player! Since moving to Province he became so big headed!

      Gert - 2011-09-19 14:06

@Nitronic Overrated by whom? Even JJ Harmse (yes JJ) rated him is the best SA #8 after the S15 series. Big headed? Please explain.

      jk - 2011-09-19 14:09

nitronic- shows your lack of common rugby knowledge...the guy is head & shoulders above the rest!!!wake up please!! or leave...ok

      Jeffrey Jones - 2011-09-19 14:20

You obviously know nothing about rugby.

      FJ2 - 2011-09-19 14:55

No, actually a very good player. Should have stayed with FS, though ...

      Humpme Dumpm - 2011-09-19 14:56

@Nitronic..........thats a bit over the top.......don't confuse confidence with big be successful you have to have confidence.............he's a good player who now has the benefit of operating in a good pack........@JK.........whether he's the best is a matter of opinion....he's a hard man.....but lacks the speed and silky skills of Kankowski........but they're different. Spies has been off his best. He has "hard" hands and dies with the ball too often......but if given oh man....he's dangerous

      jk - 2011-09-19 15:19

if it wasnt for duane's injuries everytime he gets selected for the boks..

      Friksepappa - 2011-09-19 18:22

  • nixcroft - 2011-09-19 16:21

i personally think this guy can do with the time off, great no 8 no doubt, bit of a loose cannon and is penalty and yellow card material the way he played in the S15. Or maybe he just isn't as smart or wise yet as Brussow or good ol' Richie :) I hope he recovers soon and gets that discipline problem under control. Very good future bok prospect no doubt.... go LIONS !!!

      Fleckie - 2011-09-19 19:35

Ou dom Duane, shame, nou nie juis 'n "loss" as hy nie speel nie

  • 722 - 2011-09-19 21:15
