Top accolades for Lions duo

2012-10-03 17:27

Cape Town - Golden Lions coach Johan Ackermann and his star flyhalf Elton Jantjies were on Wednesday named as the Currie Cup coach and player of month respectively for September.

Ackermann’s calm assurance has the led the Lions to top of the standings as he has demonstrated an ability to keep his players focused on defending their 2011 Currie Cup title. He beat off the challenge of Griquas Coach Pote Human, who steered his side to three consecutive wins, pushing them into semi-final contention, after a slow start to their campaign.

Jantjies was instrumental in the Lions’ success during September with superb kicking and generalship of his team’s attacking play. The newly capped Springbok was named man of the match against the Free State Cheetahs and is one of the leading scorers with 77 points.

In true Currie Cup fashion, young players produced excellent performances were other contenders in Western Province centre Marcel Brache and hooker Scarra Ntubeni. Players such as Sarel Pretorius and Willie Le Roux also stepped up to the challenge and were worthy nominees.

The announcements were made at two separate handovers on Wednesday with Ackermann at Johannesburg Stadium and Jantjies at the Springbok team hotel.

Both winners walked away with R10 000 each.

Personally, I would have gone with Marcel Brache. Very exciting player, he could really do with a green and gold jersey in the future.

I would give it Brache - the guy has lit up the Currie Cup. This is obviously a push for Jantjies to be selected as first choice flyhalf. Brache deserves it easily

And against the Lions he played like a schoolboy!!! You WP supporters are really one-eyed! Brache? Wtf?

Marcel "no brains" Brache. Did you see his pass this weekend to the invisible man?

And here I thought that Pine-the-Apple Pienaar would be a shoe-in! Oh well...

@henk Eet jy of Doraine die meeste?

      whine.sadie - 2012-10-03 19:28

@daspoort For a 17yr cupless Stormer supporter you've got a lot to say?

@whine Dis nie die moeite werd om met 'n aap/suurstofdief soos jy in 'n argument betrokke te raak nie! Jy beteken nie veel vir die samelewing nie!

Well deserved. Congratulations. Extremely proud of you guys. Just a pity about next year.

  • nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-10-04 06:52

Awesome, congrats to both, and well deserved by both of them :) Very good to see the Lions are starting to build the same momentum now as what they've build last year in the CC! GO LIONS!!! Keep the cup in JHB!!!

Both coach and player deserve this kind of recognition, I just hope one would be able to see Elton being given more gametime in this weekend's game against the AB's, not that Goosen is a bad choice at all, in fact, the latter has shown his class already, but one would really love to see how Jantjies respond to such tougher challenges, he is most definitely also a player for the future. Just a pitty he is playing for the Stormers next year, would have loved to rather see him play for the Sharks or the Cheetahs.
