Sharks v WP: Kicking vital

2012-10-26 07:43

Cape Town - Western Province backline coach Robbie Fleck has emphasised the important role tactical kicking will play in their Currie Cup final against the Sharks in Durban on Saturday.

Fleck believes tactical kicking played a big part in the last few encounters between the two teams, with the Sharks emerging victorious on all those occasions.

The Sharks have won the last three clashes between the teams - once in the Super Rugby semi-finals and twice in the Currie Cup - and with a wet and heavy field expected on Saturday, tactical kicking will play a vital role again.

"The Sharks beat as at the kicking game in our last three encounters. Our focus this week was on our kicking structures and set pieces," Fleck told Die Burger's website.

"There's a perception that the Blue Bulls kick better than any other team, but they came second in that department against the Sharks last weekend.

"In the Super Rugby competition we didn't fare well compared to the Sharks' kicking. It's something we've talked about this week."

Sharks fullback Louis Ludik will be key here, with his ability in the air a key asset. He was also man-of-the-match when the Sharks beat WP 43-27 in Durban a few weeks ago. Fleck is also wary of Sharks flyhalf Patrick Lambie. "He was brilliant last week against the Bulls. He dictated play and his decision making was at a different level," he said.

Therefore, a big test awaits the WP duo of fullback Gio Aplon and flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis...

Kick-off at Kings Park is at 17:00 on Saturday.

Its sad to say: Province used to be the kings of running rugby, (explains all the trophies) but they seem to concentrate only on defense these days which made them lose their attacking flair.

With jordaan, peterson, lambie and mvovo at the back the shalks wil have to much gas!and with a world class forward pack like that its impossible to loose to a kaas en wyn team like the wp!this team is probably the best team the sharks have ever had!this wil be like sa police team vs the all blacks!sharks by 30

Werstern Province back line performance? For the last two years I have my dought about our National and WP back line performances. I noticed on Saturday against the Lions for the first time in years we penetrated the advantage line because the senters played the gaps. Jean De Villiers dont get the the back line to perform, so I would start him no where in my line -up. New cummers showed good efforts and it paid of. With Taute at next year I see less chance for Jean. (mabe the kings can use him) The forwards do all whats needed buy on Saturday against the sharks the back-line must perform in all aspects. The players that will play towards the ball instaed of parrallel and away of the ball is the side that will raise the cup...Think on their feet dont go to ground to soon and WP will win...other wise Skarks will be your day again.

      Billy - 2012-10-26 10:12

jean is a great player, but lately if he gets frustrated or makes a mistake he pulls down the entire team. if he's on form the entire team is on form, but if he dropped a pass or fumbles a ball his entire game turns down and the team feels this etc. the pressure moment last week against the lions, WP stepped up, Deon is the type of guy that gets more and more worked up the more pressure there is, we need this, jean starts to slump.

  • hans.himmler.7 - 2012-10-26 09:17

WP number 12 sums it up "Allende". Ja-nee, 'n ellende wag vir die WP. BLACK.WHITE.DYNAMITE

  • Billy - 2012-10-26 10:08

WRONG! kicking is NOT the way to go in this game, WP has to run the ball if they are going to get anything right in the match, the sharks team is a MONSTER, playing strategic "finals rugby" is not the right game for WP against this sharks team. get the ball to the guys at the back and let them move it between them, as much as possible. if they try match the sharks team in a slow paced strategy game, they will lose, that big sharks team will wear them down. play what you have, what you have are fast paced quick moving youngsters that comminucate brilliantly with each other. great stepping, great gap making, great pace. use it. we are already in the final, might as well give it all we got.

  • theunis.botha.96 - 2012-10-26 10:12

This is going to be such an one sided event that I decided not to watch the game-rather start selebrating my side of support's victory as from noon today.Tan a few rump steaks (6 days matured),east coast radio etc, etc.

      paul.sdoow - 2012-10-26 13:55

we don't get east coast radio but we also celebrating a triple already

  • magnus.j.vanvuuren - 2012-10-26 12:42

for wp to win i think they will need a couple of things to go there why 1. line outs will have to be spot on for them and sloppy for us 2 there forwards have to be on top of there game to stop lambie getting quality ball 3. the sharks must not give aplon or habana to much room only then will they win.... go sharks

  • bester.riaan.3 - 2012-10-26 14:50

Kom WP saai amok, dis bietjie julle beurt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • eugene.brink.9 - 2012-10-26 16:06

  • hendrick.theron - 2012-10-26 16:26

the sharks must play their usaul game alot off hard running rugby and quick offloads the wp does not have the physicality factor that the sharks has gained this season geuss that what you get when you take notes out of the new zealand training manual
