Sharks to lose Bok brothers?

2011-08-03 07:30

Cape Town - The Sharks are apparently without a Springbok hooker on their list of contracted players for the 2012 season.

Springbok captain John Smit has already announced that he will join English club side, Saracens, after the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

And according to the Beeld newspaper, the Sharks could also be without the services of Bismarck du Plessis and his brother Jannie.

Their contracts have apparently come to and end at the Sharks and they could play elsewhere after the World Cup.

  • Agile - 2011-08-03 07:38

Elsewhere? In South Africa, or overseas?

      Ysberg - 2011-08-03 07:46

Stormers need them urgently!! Please AC, make an offer!

      Glen - 2011-08-03 07:50

      No, at the Lions please!!!

      Super G - 2011-08-03 08:00

Ysberg...What do you mean the Stormers need them? If you got the services of Bismark, the Stormers would have more hookers than Long Street!

      Ysberg - 2011-08-03 08:09

@ Super ... if John Smit can play at prop, then Bismarck can do the same ...anything is better than the two plonkers currently in the front row.

      apie - 2011-08-03 08:35

I believe they are seriously considering the overseas option. With Chilliboy the first choice hooker after Smit, Bismark (the best hooker in the country) does not stand a chance. And so we lose more good guys because of anc racist policies.

johny those so called has beens made WP the top SA team in the last 2 years....

      RQd2 - 2011-08-03 11:38

@martin who do you support? the Bulls? Who have just signed Engelbrecht, Sadie, Jacques Potgieter, Jano Vermaak... All from other unions...

      Redwine - 2011-08-03 12:18

Cheeky signed them a month ago for the Kings. Keep your eyes on the Baai hi kom groot stories.

      Shona - 2011-08-03 12:22

@Apie...they talking about leaving Sharks so why u bringing Chilliboy into your comment? (maybe I've missed that he's joining Sharks). If he had to move overseas he would still play for Boks. With Smit leaving Sharks, Bismarck would be our main hooker. We would have Beast, Bismarck and Jannie back as front row and our team will be great pressure like there was this year with players not knowing where they stood with regards to Smit being there.

      Gungets Tuft - 2011-08-03 13:41

Ohhh dearie me Mr Marais. Do you believe your own b#llsh#t.

  • Ray - 2011-08-03 07:50

Ok, I may a subjective here, but arn't these 2 players supposed to be PRETTY good??? Any reason why the Sharks would not want to renew - unless of course the Du Plessis brothers are holding out for a bigger paycheck from elsewhere? Would be a pity to lose them but money does talk the loudest.

      Hein - 2011-08-03 07:55

I think you've hit the nail center on the head - the other thing is you've got to take the package as Bismarck needs to carry Jannie to his bed every night seeing that Jannie falls asleep in front of the TV every night. So maybe, just maybe, one of the two are not wanted by the Sharks anymore?????????????????

      GHT - 2011-08-03 08:16

I can't see the sharks not wanting them. It must be their own choice. We really could do with Jannie here in Cape Town!

      John - 2011-08-03 09:01

Exactly - if they are smart negotiators they will hold out and at the very least get one or two offers from elsewhere. They are "mommies boys" so they won't want to be too far from the plaas. The Sharks could of course signup Barney (prop/hooker) for another 4 years. This will also give Divvy the opportunity to pick him for the WC after the next one.

      StaalBurgher - 2011-08-03 10:00

I suspect this is just media hype. The Sharks have no reason not to renew unless the du Plessis brothers want to move abroad. And thus far I have not seen any evidence that Chilliboy will be played ahead of Bismarck whether Smit is there or not. I don't think that is a concern for him, they are both in the 22 rested players after all so that tells me they are 1st choice still.

      kosie - 2011-08-03 09:42

only place they will want go is to the bulls they aren't interested in going anywhere else, but the sharks won't let bismarck go...

      Shona - 2011-08-03 12:26

If they went to Bulls then they'd be stupid (well Bismarck mostly) cos that's where Chilliboy is. He needs to be in a team where he is the main hooker not playing 2nd best anymore

  • Gorilla - 2011-08-03 08:38

"Their contacts have apparently come to and end at the Sharks" this makes a news story these days? This means that they are leaving the sharks? Please man get some facts before you float a story like this.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-03 09:08

@Gorilla - never let facts get in the way of a good story mate...Journalism 101. Journalism 201 - who cares if a quote is taken out of context. Journalism 203 - If all attempts to get information fail, make up your own facts.

      tyrone jacoby - 2011-08-03 09:42

yup , these clowns dont know how to find real stories so they spread rumours , a bunch of idiots for sure

      EXBULL - 2011-08-03 13:04

I dont mark on my calender when each and every rugby player's contract expires, so this story was quite interesting to me. I've read the article and dont see any fact being manufactured or anything of the sort. The author clearly states that this was according to the beeld newspaper. He is also, like evryone else, speculating as to what might happen or where they might go as clearly nobody knows. These clown journo's as they are being called, keep us glued to our PC's, Laptops and cellplhones day after day.

  • tyrone jacoby - 2011-08-03 09:39

Typical sensationalist journalism... Both Brothers will most probably stay in Durban , they grew up as Sharks supporters and lover playing for the Sharks. Of course this will have to be confirmed, but again typical to the Beeld they try spread rumours as they did with the JOHN SMIT and JPP and KANKOWSKI will be lions, and where do those 3 players play presently?? Renewing contracts or the fact that a contract term is comming to an end does not mean a player will move on , will leave. Actually what this shows is how desperate some journo;s are for some news

good point!!! But he doesn't buy the players...

  • On the Verge - 2011-08-03 10:16

You can have Jannie, and Bizzie is great, but gives away too many penalties. Time to promote Craig Burden and Eugene De Kock to the 1st choice

Apparently the stormers have been speaking to them quite a lot, but I'm sure tthere are a lot of other unions and overseas clubs tthat will be doing the same so you'll never know what is going to happen. I am just happy that Brussow is apparently coming to CT!

      Steyts - 2011-08-03 10:41

Oh and Riaan Viljoen will also be joining WP next year... Apparently...

  • Sh@rks Fever - 2011-08-03 10:41

@ Martin. I still wonder why you hate the SHARKS so much. Did the 1990 currie cup final destroy your life or something. Anyways the Du Plesies brothers will stay at the Sharks. They are amongst the most paid players in the Sharks team and the SHARKS will counter offer any offer from any other union. Secondly we have two of the best hookers in the country in Craig Burden and Kyle Cooper so we don't lack any depth there. At prop we have more than enough talent as wellin Herbst, Van Staaden and the Beast. And a few big boys still to come. Besides how can you be call the SHARKS platic if all other unions work on the same principles by buying players. This isn't club rugby.

  • Shaun Petersen - 2011-08-03 10:54

The Bulls want them and are offering free steak with it, WO could use them but they wont come to CT, Sharks not performing at all lately so I would also wanna make the move, Cheetahs will be great with them, but because I am a WP fan I would advise them to stay by the Sharks as anywhere else they will not work as hard and their game will become less than impressive.

  • seahare - 2011-08-03 13:05
